Netflix has announced the release of a new anime series DOTA: Dragon’s Blood, which will be based on Valve’s extremely popular multiplayer game DOTA 2. The eight-episode series will narrate the story of Davion, the Dragon Knight, a hero from the game with a versatile skill set. Along with him, Princess Mirana, who is known for her hunting abilities and her Sacred Arrow in the game, will also make an appearance.
With the series all set to premiere on Netflix on March 25, the streaming giant has launched its first trailer. The minute-long clip has caused a flurry of conversations on social media, with fans of the game sharing their reactions over the decision to turn the hugely-popular franchise into an anime series. While many have expressed their joy, hardcore fans don’t believe that the series will be able to do justice to their favorite game.

Ashley Edward Miller, who has previously worked on projects like X-Men: First Class, Thor and Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, has been brought on board as the showrunner and executive producer. She describes DOTA: Dragon’s Blood as “an epic, emotional, and adult-oriented story” that will highlight some of the players’ favorite characters. Animation for the show has been done by Studio MIR, the South Korean company that also brought together Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender and The Legend of Korra.
DOTA 2 could work as a good choice to convert into a series as it happens to be one of the leading online games in the world. The game not only hosts millions of players every month, but it is also famous for its annual e-sports tournament, The International, which usually consists of large prize earnings.
Valve originally released the game in 2013 as a follow-up to Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a multiplayer online battle arena mod for Blizzard’s Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos. It isn’t the only game that has been picked up for an adaptation by Netflix. Other games have already been turned into a TV series. Some of the most popular ones include CD Projekt Red’s The Witcher series, which is currently producing its second season, and Konami’s Castlevania, which has been renewed for a fourth season. And that’s not all. Netflix is currently working on at least eight other projects that involve video game adaptations, with the most recent announcement being about Ubisoft’s Assassin's Creed.
DOTA: Dragon's Blood will premiere on Netflix on March 25, 2021.
