Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War pros are getting some strange placements in its ranked mode, League Play. The recent competitive mode added to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War seems to have a few issues with player performance rating.
One of the main draws for the series is the fast-paced, precision shooting in a multiplayer setting. While there is always a competitive edge to matches in Call of Duty, modern titles take it up a notch. Treyarch added League Play to the game for fans to show off their skills, and Season 2 stats for the official League are looking good. However, it looks like there are some questionable rating decisions happening behind the curtain.

The main problem stems from where pro Call of Duty players are ranking after completing the initial matches. From the League Play details Treyarch dropped, there are five different divisions in the mode. It turns out that some of the best competitors around ended up in the bottom bracket. According to professionals Joseph "Owakening" Conley and Adam "Assault" Garcia, they somehow placed in the Competitor division even after impressive performances. This level includes 50% of players, which means these pros fall into the bottom half of the entire community playing.
Since both players in question are part of professional esports teams that compete regularly, this ranking seems suspect. Especially since other major names in the league scene have placed in the Master and Elite brackets. However, Treyarch's studio design director David Vonderhaar offers less than committed remarks about the situation. After seeing Owakening's rank, Vonderhaar suggests that it could be legit or a bug, and that the team would need to trace the games. It sounds like more data about placements is necessary before the developers look into making any fixes.
If there is actually a bug causing players to be placed incorrectly, that is pretty concerning. The whole point of a ranked mode or League Play is to have gamers of similar skill go head to head. With pro players in the bottom bracket, they are going to easily crush the enemy. A bug in the system would not necessarily be shocking with glitches giving unfair advantages affecting Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War lately.
However, this could be a case of some fans jumping to conclusions too early. While it is strange for pro players to fall into the bottom bracket, it is not happening to all of them. It could be possible that Owakening and Assault actually did not perform well enough to place higher. If there is a bug, to avoid any more League Play backlash Treyarch should get a fix out fast.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
