After receiving the first three installments of the Borderlands series in the Legendary Collection, the Switch is about to feature the spin-off of the series, Tales from the Borderlands. The game was developed by Telltale Games and initially did not see a release on Nintendo platforms, until now.

Tales from the Borderlands differs greatly from the other entries. While the first three games in the series are looter shooter RPGs, Tales from the Borderlands is mostly a narrative experience in the vein of Telltale's other games, like The Walking Dead or The Wolf Among Us.

Revealed during today's Nintendo Direct, the game is not far off, with a planned launch on March 24, 2021. While this is the first time it will be available for Switch, it marks a bit of a resurgence for the game, as when Telltale Games went under in 2018, the game went with it for a time. Tales from the Borderlands just recently found its way back onto digital storefronts, and is now available again.

While there are some combat sections in the form of quicktime events, players should not expect to be mowing down psychos left and right like they would in other games in the series. Nor will they choose a vault hunter as they do in other Borderlands titles. Instead, players will jump into the shoes of Hyperion executive Rhys and con artist Fiona as they share their stories at the behest of a mysterious stranger.

As with any other Telltale game, players will play through Tales from the Borderlands story episodically. They will switch between Rhys and Fiona in each of the five episodes, which are about two hours long. Players will make decisions as the two characters that will impact how the story progresses.

Despite the gameplay differences, however, the writing and world-building are still very much on par with previous games in the series. Players should expect a lot of Borderlands' humor and stories about vaults. While knowledge of the previous three games is not necessary to enjoy Tales from the Borderlands, there are appearances of recurring characters in the series that fans should appreciate.

The game also did well for itself when it launched on other systems back in 2014. Each episode of the game has a favorable score on Metacritic, with no episode falling below a score of 75 on PC or PS4. When the final episode of the game launched in 2015, it was also nominated at the Game Awards for the best narrative.

Tales from the Borderlands will be released on Switch on March 24, 2021.
