Koei Tecmo reveals Samurai Warriors 5 during Wednesday's Nintendo Direct, showing off a first look at the next Warriors musou game.

It seems like the Nintendo Switch is increasingly becoming the console platform for musou gamers. During Wednesday's Nintendo Direct, Koei Tecmo revealed a brand new entry in the Samurai Warriors franchise. It's not a Samurai Warriors spin-off like the 2016 Spirit of Sanada release, however. It's the full-fledged next main-series game, Samurai Warriors 5. Musou fans will be able to pick up Samurai Warriors 5 on Nintendo Switch starting during the summer of 2021.

The Samurai Warriors 5 story will be told from two different perspectives. Nobunaga Oda and Mitsuhide Akechi will be the game's main protagonists, participating in a historical drama set during Japan's Sengoku period. Specifically, the story is set during the Ōnin War, a civil war lasting between 1467 and 1477. It was the Ōnin War that set off the Sengoku period of power struggles within Japan, making it a fitting setting for Samurai Warriors 5.

Early details regarding the musou game are thin, however. All that Koei Tecmo is willing to reveal so far is that Samurai Warriors 5 will feature both new and returning characters from the series. These characters will feature a selection of new abilities with which to take on the endless enemies thrown at the player. Otherwise, Koei Tecmo says to expect the strategic action fans expect of the Warriors franchise.

While Samurai Warriors 5 was revealed as part of the latest Nintendo Direct for the Switch, it has also been confirmed for other platforms. Players will be able to pick it up not just for the Switch, but also on PC, PS4, and Xbox One, as well as next-gen consoles via backward compatibility. Expect further details on other support platforms in the months to come.

Samurai Warriors 5 releases this summer on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
