The Outer Worlds debuted in 2019 and was well-received by fans and critics. A spiritual successor to Obsidian Entertainment’s previous work Fallout: New Vegas, The Outer Worlds has followed the lead of its almost-predecessor in a few ways. Most recently, The Outer Worlds has received DLC, though not nearly as many expansions as New Vegas got. The first DLC, titled "Peril on Gorgon," came out in September 2020 and led players to a nearly-abandoned Spacer’s Choice research facility on the outskirts of the galaxy, on the Gorgon asteroid.
When players buy The Outer Worlds DLC, they can choose to buy Peril on Gorgon individually or in a bundle called the Expansion Pass, that combines both Peril on Gorgon with the eventual release of Murder on Eridanos. Not much is known about the upcoming DLC, but there are enough clues to piece together that players may have a good idea about not only when Murder on Eridanos will release, but what the plot will entail as well.

Of course, the developer hasn’t released any information that can give players a concrete date to look forward to. Instead, there was a recent report that said Obsidian wants to release Murder on Eridanos in Q1. For those unfamiliar with this kind of terminology, Q1 is the first quarter of the year, so with 4 quarters in a year spanning approximately 3 months each, players can hopefully expect the release of the new Outer Worlds DLC before the end of March. March 31 is when Q1 ends, so it’s not suggested players hold their breath until then, but a little hope (rarely) hurts anyone.
On the other hand, things change in the video game world pretty regularly, and even more than usual this past year because of the Covid-19 pandemic. Many video game titles saw releases pushed back for a variety of reasons, but a lot of it revolved around the pandemic. Though Obsidian Entertainment has not stated it explicitly, it’s entirely possible the development of Murder on Eridanos could have been postponed and just not announced. On the flip side, many video game developers have also learned to adapt to pandemic work-life balance, so maybe the DLC didn’t get as delayed as some other video game projects.

Again, not many details have been released on the plotline Murder on Eridanos will follow, but there’s enough of a synopsis blurb for players to get a general idea of what will happen when the DLC releases. Murder on Eridanos is advertised as “Halcyon Helen’s final and finest adventure!” Halcyon Helen may not ring a bell to players immediately, but her name is actually featured in a loading screen advertisement for a “serial” called Terror on Monarch. Halcyon Helen is played by Ruth Bellamy.
To players these names might not mean a lot, but for crew members Parvati Holcomb and Felix Millstone, they mean quite a bit. If the two are chosen as companions for the Stranger, their dialogue eventually turns to talking about the serials they’ve been watching. They’ll mention Halcyon Helen in her own show, as well as guest starring on a different show for a “romance arc.” Felix will even mention Ruth Bellamy making a guest appearance on a different serial. Felix and Parvati were incredibly excited to solve the mystery introduced in Peril on Gorgon, so it’s safe to say they’ll be equally excited to tackle whatever happens in Murder on Eridanos.
There aren’t many clues as to what Halcyon Helen’s final adventure will actually be, but players are sure to be in for a mix of drama and horrific revelations, if Peril on Gorgon is any blueprint for Murder on Eridanos.
The Outer Worlds: Peril on Gorgon is available now for Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
