DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power Announced for Nintendo Switch

There were a lot of expectations for the Nintendo Direct and a Nintendo Switch-exclusive DC Super Hero Girls tie-in was certainly not one of them.

It had been over a year since the last proper Nintendo Direct, so expectations were higher than usual for the most recent one. Games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2Mario Kart 9, and Metroid Prime 4 were being thrown around prior to it, but fans were instead met with some really unexpected oddities, like Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville: Complete Edition and DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power.

A tie-in to the Cartoon Network show, DC Super Hero Girls, the very brief trailer doesn't explain a lot about it, but judging from the glimpses of gameplay, it appears to be an action-brawler of some kind with life-sim elements. Players take control of several DC heroines, including Batgirl, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman, to fight supervillains but also hang out around town. It's likely that Bumblebee, Zatanna, and the Jessica Cruz Green Lantern (the other three main characters from the show) will be playable as well.

The cartoon takes these DC heroines and depicts them as teenagers attending high-school, where they form the titular superhero team. Helmed by Lauren Faust, the creator of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, its first season concluded back in December and the show is expected to come back for a second season.

Judging by the like/dislike ratio on the announcement trailer, a lot of people are clearly displeased with the game's announcement, but this likely more to do with the lack of major game reveals at the Direct than the quality of the game itself. This is in spite of the fact that the game is clearly made for a much younger audience and fans of the show.

It's not like the Direct was completely bereft of surprise announcements for die-hard fans. A Switch port of The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword was finally confirmed and there was a shock Splatoon 3 reveal right at the end.

DC Super Hero Girls: Teen Power will release for Nintendo Switch on June 4.
