In a time before the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was a world where DC was the dominant name in superhero films, and the two biggest costumed crime fighters were still Batman and Superman. Even now, many fans of superhero movies have likely seen both Michael Keaton's Batman and Christopher Reeve's Superman, which are both partially responsible for bringing DC heroes to the silver screen.
Despite that, it has been years since either Batman or Superman has had an uncontroversial film, with Zack Snyder's Justice League being the latest to divide fans, and the DC cinematic universe has been struggling to keep up with Marvel. So, fans of those classic Batman and Superman films may be on the lookout for a return to a more familiar, nostalgic setting, and those fans will have to look no further than DC's latest comic announcement.

Those longing for a return to old-school heroes can rest easy knowing that DC has them covered. The comic publisher has announced a new line of comics that will see Keaton's Batman and Reeve's Superman return for more adventures in their respective cities. Fittingly titled Superman '78 and Batman '89, the two comics are hoping to follow in the footsteps of the films they borrow from.
According to the synopses provided, Batman '89 will be following on from the Tim Burton films, hoping to continue some of the plot threads left unresolved by the original films. The project intends to bring back the film version of Catwoman, as well as introduce a new Robin and a new story arc for Two-Face, the villainous alter-ego of Harvey Dent.
Similarly, the Superman '78 comic line will follow on from the first Richard Donner film, set in a time where Lois Lane doesn't yet know Clark Kent's secret identity. The new comic storyline hopes to recreate the lighthearted charm of the original film, and the genuine awe and wonder the accompanied the Christopher Reeve version of the character.
The two new comics will debut six digital chapters each on July 27th, followed by a new chapter for each following week for six weeks. Each 12-chapter story will eventually be released as six individual comic books, along with a complete hardcover collection for each comic.
Batman and Superman: The Movie are now available on HBO Max.
