HBO Max is getting an Aquaman animated miniseries, and a new promo image shows fans what kind of art style they have to look forward to.

If there's one superhero who's had a real roller coaster of content over the past few years, well, there isn't. There are definitely several. But one of them is Aquaman, whose surprisingly endearing portrayal in 2017's Justice League and 2018's Aquaman film really seems to have given the character new life. Nowhere is this more apparent than in a new promotional image for the character's upcoming animated series.

HBO Max and Cartoon Network just released the first glimpse at Aquaman: King of Atlantis, and it looks like it will really crank up the zaniness. Sporting an eclectic art style and popping colors, the shot certainly inspires the imagination to run wild. This is helpful, considering audiences have precious little other information on the show thus far. However, WarnerMedia did release a synopsis back when the series was first announced in 2020.

According to the original press release, the 3-part miniseries will begin on Aquaman's first day as King of Atlantis, and he'll have a lot of work to do. With the help of his advisors, including Mera the warrior-princess who can control water (played in the film and its upcoming sequel by Amber Heard), Aquaman will have to deal with all sorts of obstacles from outside and even within his own family as he works to prove his worth. It seems fairly likely that the open-ended premise is only there to allow for lots of wacky hijinks, which becomes even more obvious when one looks at the art style.

Striking action poses that would make a chiropractor drop their tea, Aquaman and Mera are shown ready for all sorts of adventures in the promo image. The series will be directed by James Wan, who also directed 2018's well-received Aquaman, so it will be interesting to see how his style translates to animation. Given how much action and movement was present in the film, his own brand of direction seems well-suited for this sort of medium change. Though it probably won't involve giant see-saws like the Aquaman movie, at least.

Now, many people's first reaction to the promo image may very well be on the negative side. There have been lots of animated shows in recent years that used similar art styles, and a small but vocal number of viewers have expressed less than favorable opinions on the look. This is understandable, given how stale things can get if variety gets put on the backburner. Not even Disney is immune to the idea of similar art styles. However, it's important to note that the show's actual writing and performances haven't even been glimpsed as of yet, so it might be worth withholding judgment until more information is revealed.

Regardless of people's initial views on Aquaman: King of Atlantis, it's coming from a competent director and definitely looks like something that will catch the eye. Perhaps that's all it needs. No word on whether it will feature Jason Momoa's heartwarming energy, though.

Aquaman: King of Atlantis is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2021.
