The Last of Us was a landmark video game that cemented developer Naughty Dog as one of the most respected creative teams of the decade. Now that The Last of Us is headed for the small screen, a gifted artist has shared her vision of actors Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey in their leading roles as Joel and Ellie.
The art is brought to us by Alice X. Zhang, an accomplished artist that has worked on many well-known projects across the entertainment industry. Her portfolio includes works commissioned from Marvel, Star Wars, Disney Books, and even the sequel to Naughty Dog’s 2013 masterpiece, The Last of Us Part 2. While Zhang does not officially work on the HBO production, she put her talents to good use with these excellent new depictions of unforgettable characters.

Pedro Pascal is known most recently for his leading role in the first live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian. The internet has been quick to note the character parallels between Mando and Joel; both are bad-ass lone wanderers learning to love through protecting a younger, more innocent companion. Pascal’s experiences in a galaxy far, far away are sure to help his depiction of Joel, a veteran of the apocalypse on modern earth. Zhang pictures Pascal as Joel with hard eyes and a distant expression, hinting at a dark past to run from.
Bella Ramsey is a young actress who made her debut in another HBO show: Game of Thrones. Zhang shows Ellie as a hardened, serious character who looks the audience straight in the eyes. Ellie was a memorable character because of her relationship with Joel, who takes her under his wing and learns a few things from her along their journey together. Ramsey also played a strong young woman in Game of Thrones, and gamers are excited to see her take on Ellie.
The Last of Us released to near-universal critical acclaim, spawning countless works of art inspired by Joel and Ellie’s journey. From incredible fan cosplay to this new big-budget television series, the industry will likely be feeling the waves left by this game for quite some time.
The sequel to this seminal title, The Last of Us Part 2, made waves for an entirely different reason. The game was derided nearly as much as it was praised, despite eventually taking the Game Awards 2020 Game of the Year award. The relative unpopularity of Part 2 compared to the original suggests that the HBO series will most likely surround events of the first game.
Despite its divisive sequel, The Last of Us remains secured in the hearts of many gamers around the world. With the support of the series creator Neil Druckmann and sky-high fan expectations, the industry eagerly awaits the return of Joel and Ellie on a journey through the apocalypse once again.
The Last of Us: Remastered and The Last of Us Part 2 are available on PS4.
