Valheim's mechanics are unique in the game world, and one of the most important to watch for survival is the comfort level of a character.

In the world of survival adventure games, Valheim stands out from the crowd because of its environment. The game also stands out because of the number of different mechanics Valheim offers.

Valheim's mysteries and mechanics pop up throughout the game, but there's one particular state of being that might be the most important of all. Comfort, and the ability to build it up over the course of the game, plays into several other mechanics. Because it's so ingrained in other aspects of the game, there are some who may be a bit confused just how the mechanic works.

Valheim's unexpected popularity isn't just about the harsh environment surrounding players in the game. Most survival games' environments are built to hurt a character over time. As is the case with several other titles in this genre, crafting and building a refuge is huge in its success. Staying safe and warm is key in this game, as it's nordic in nature. The cold and nasty weather plays a part early on, so getting shelter and finding comfort is the only way a player's character is going to survive long.

As millions of Valheim players have already learned, the biggest factor in finding comfort is building a home and starting a fire. Once the fire is lit, the home becomes "comfortable." In order to build up a player's comfort level, the house can be expanded and built upon. Eventually, players can add furniture, while keeping the house warm and lit. Continuing to boost the "comfort" level of a character allows for the "rested" buff to increase. In turn, getting a character to be well-rested will have a positive effect on their stamina and health regeneration.

As the house continues to be comfortable, both health and stamina will stay up longer. Those values are important when it comes to journeying around Valheim's world, especially when someone goes into the swamps. Having a place for a character to return once they have been exposed to the elements, enemies, or wild animals is the only way someone is going to make it far into the game.

Comfort is such an important aspect of Valheim that even players who don't normally like decorating in these kinds of games should pay the mechanic more attention. Every little bit of furniture and decorations hung on the walls will all contribute to improving comfort. Making sure the house is warm and cozy is just a part of the survival experience.

Valheim is available now in Early Access on PC.
