Devil Daggers turns five years old, and to celebrate it releases a new update featuring a brand-new weapon, optimization changes, and more.

Devil Daggers turns five years old this month. The arena-based first-person shooter is based on classic games from the 1990s such as Quake and Doom, which once used pixelated graphics as a computing necessity, but these days the original Doom can run on a calculator. Gamers have to stick to their home computers to run Devil Daggers, but as the game celebrates its 5th anniversary, the developer releases a quality-of-life update.

The retro-style shooter finds players in an arena facing endless hoards of demon enemies in a fight to last as long as possible. It's fast-paced mayhem quickly gets difficult, perhaps reminiscent of the difficulty in Quake that led to Doom creator John Romero destroying a keyboard in frustration.

The new update adds a special dagger for anyone who can last 1,000 seconds or longer, replay scrubbing so players to rewind and fast forward their replays to find exact moments, as well as several optimizations and glitch fixes. Devil Daggers never had the humorous array of glitchy issues that Cyberpunk 2077 saw, but it now runs smoother than ever thanks to the 5th anniversary update.

Devil Daggers isn't the only video game-related birthday in recent months. Fans were recently celebrating the 30th anniversary of the studio that brought Doom to the world, id Software, and its first game Commander Keen. For any gamers who are feeling nostalgic because of id Software's birthday, the freshly updated Devil Daggers may be the perfect game to boot up in order to experience some classic 90s action captured in the modern era.

Devil Daggers is available now on Steam.
