The trailer for the upcoming Mortal Kombat film was released last week and only left fans asking for more. The trailer punches in the right amount of action and representation for the wildly popular video game from the '90s. The reactions from the fans were so moving that producer Todd Garner became a little emotional and confessed to being moved to “tears of joy” on his official Twitter page.
Over the course of the day, Garner shared several videos on Twitter of fans reacting positively to the first Mortal Kombat trailer. From shock to the excitement, the videos captured all the raw emotions of people who have been waiting for the franchise to return to the big screen. With the last Mortal Kombat adaptation releasing in 1997, the movie franchise is making a big comeback after more than two decades and it would be safe to say that fans are thrilled.

Mortal Kombat wrapped filming in December 2019 and entered its post-production phase, with the release date scheduled for 2021. Having been shot in South Australia, many members of the cast and crew had to be away from home for months to complete the project. Garner states on his Twitter account that he had to be away from his family for almost five months to ensure that the reboot could come to life. “Your smiles & gasps have made it all worth it today,” he wrote while thanking his fans for the wonderful reception.
The first Mortal Kombat game was released in 1992, which was the beginning of the journey for one of the most successful fighting game franchises in the history of video games. Over the years, multiple sequels of the game have arrived on different gaming consoles, with the latest being Mortal Kombat 11 for the PS4 and Xbox. So far, two movie adaptations have been made, 1995’s Mortal Kombat and 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. While a third entry was supposed to be produced, the second title’s poor reception led to the cancellation of those plans.
Now, the big franchise will be returning with its latest reboot in April 2021. All the big Mortal Kombat characters will be making an appearance, as is visible in the trailer, with rumors of some secret characters making a cameo. While the two previous adaptations were PG-13, the first trailer of the reboot has been rated R, beginning with a red band. The game is known for its violence and gore, especially keeping in mind the brutal finishing moves. Due to their rating, the movies released in the '90s had to avoid much of that violence, but fans are expecting a lot more from the upcoming reboot. If the trailer is anything to go by, the movie will do justice to the game’s exciting fights and bring in all the action that fans love.
Mortal Kombat is planned for release in theaters and on HBO Max starting April 16, 2021.
