Star Wars: Republic Commando is officially coming to Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 this year, with the classic tactical FPS slated for April.

Following a leak earlier this month that detailed update data found on Nintendo's servers, it was all but confirmed that Star Wars: Republic Commando would be coming to Nintendo Switch. Today, Aspyr Media made the port official, announcing that the cult-classic Star Wars shooter would be returning for both the Switch and PlayStation 4.

The title will debut on April 6 and can already be pre-ordered on the Nintendo Switch via Aspyr's website. The game was originally launched all the way back in 2005 on PC and Xbox (and can be played right now on Xbox via backward compatibility and through Steam on PC), meaning this is the first time it's come to either a Nintendo or Sony console.

Alongside the announcement, Aspyr has also debuted a new trailer, focusing on Republic Commando's action sequences and main storyline. The footage is action-packed, following Delta Squad's battle against waves of droids across a variety of Star Wars locations, including Kashyyyk and Geonosis. It also highlights some of the abilities players will be able to employ, including directing squadmates using tactical commands and wielding an array of Star Wars guns.

For those who never played the classic Star Wars shooter, the plot centers around a high-ranking clone trooper known as RC-1338 (or "Boss") who leads an outfit of three fellow soldiers known as Delta Squad. The group go on a variety of missions throughout the campaign, bonding as a team as they fight back against Separatist forces and embark on high-risk missions set during the Clone Wars. The game received decent reviews upon release, however, managed to gain a lot of traction with fans following its debut, becoming known as an underrated gem. A sequel to the title known as Imperial Commando was originally planned but was canceled early into production.

Republic Commando is returning at a great time for Star Wars, with Lucasfilm Games recently revealing that a wave of new titles set in the series' universe will be coming to consoles. Ubisoft will be working on an open-world experience centered around the IP, while developer Zynga recently announced a new free-to-play multiplayer game known as Star Wars: Hunters is coming to the Nintendo SwitchSeveral other Star Wars tie-ins are sure to follow in the coming years, with EA making it known that it intends to continue working with the license going forward. Many have speculated the company is looking to develop a follow-up to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, with the publisher claiming the original title was the first in a new franchise.

Star Wars: Republic Commando is out now on PC and Xbox, with PlayStation 4 and Switch versions slated to release on April 6.
