A new Animal Crossing: New Horizons update is live, adding new Super Mario Bros. themed items that will become available on March 1st.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons just released a new update, adding brand new Super Mario Bros themed items. This update is another part of the ongoing Super Mario Bros 35th Anniversary festivities and includes many new and returning items.

Upon updating Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players will get a free "Mushroom Mural" wallpaper for their homes. The rest of the items will not be available until March 1st. Starting next month, players will be able to purchase a variety of new clothes and furniture through the Nook Shopping app.

New clothing items include full costume sets based off of Mario, Luigi, Wario, and Princess Peach. As for the furniture, the obvious Super Mario mainstays are present, such as blocks, mushrooms, flagpoles, power-ups, and question mark blocks. Coins can now be placed like furniture and then "collected," reappearing in the placed spot a few moments later. However, the true star of this show is the new Warp Pipe item, which can actually be used to warp from one location to another.

Warp Pipes add a fast travel option that fans have been requesting for a long time as they can be placed almost anywhere, including in one's own home. The main drawback to this feature is that the connection between pipes cannot be specifically controlled; adding more than two warps causes the output pipe to be randomly selected upon entering.

The series' previous installment, Animal Crossing: New Leaf, already had some of these Super Mario themed items. Some have criticized New Horizons for removing content from previous titles and adding it back through updates much later. This update does suffer slightly from that flaw, but it also adds a brand new feature that has never appeared in an Animal Crossing game before, so it still is worth looking forward to nonetheless.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available now for Nintendo Switch.
