Publisher Devolver Digital releases the first trailer for Boomerang X, an arcadey, high-speed first-person' boomeranger' coming to Switch & PC.

Devolver Digital has announced Boomerang Xa fast-paced first-person shooter developed by DANG! The trailer, released on February 25, introduces players to the game's high-flying combat, and a taste of some of Devolver's signature tongue-in-cheek humor. A quick tour of Boomerang X's cel-shaded locales follows, topped off with the all-important (but vague) release date of Spring 2021.

As such, it's likely Boomerang X will be out within a few months- a playable demo is already available on Steam for those wanting to get their hands on the title. Fast-paced, technical gameplay in shooters has been enjoying a resurgence recently, with titles like Doom Eternal giving the retro playstyle a new coat of paint.

The gameplay seems to focus heavily on mid-air combat, using the titular boomerang as both a weapon and movement option. Players will also be able to call on the ability to slow time to allow for more complex maneuvers. Sprawling, multilayered levels complement the game's speedy traversal, hearkening to what we've seen recently in Ghostrunner.

The game's striking visuals play on video game staples, the trailer detailing Boomerang X's spin on the flooded temples and lava caves seen in so many classic games. The trailer suggests a self-aware tone that plays on industry tropes, with a hearty helping of kung-fu-movie mysticism on the side for comedic effect, complementing Boomerang X's high-flying action.

This title is DANG!'s first publisher-backed title, though not its first game altogether. Devolver Digital's focus on unique indie titles has eked out a strong position for the American publisher, with titles like Katana Zero, Enter the Gungeon, and Carrion all receiving positive feedback. Boomerang X looks like a continuation of this winning formula of refined, refreshing takes on popular genres, making full use of its varied stable of small dev teams to put out innovative titles at an impressive pace.

Boomerang X is out on PC and Switch Spring 2021.
