Monster Hunter World Iceborne: How to Get the Skull Scarf Layered Armor

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne has a wide variety of layered armor pieces, but the Skull Scarf came fairly late into the game's lifespan.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne eventually made all standard armor into layered form. This meant that if players like a specific armor set, but don't like its defense or skills, they can instead just take its appearance and put it over a set whose skills and defense they do like. The Skull Scarf only exists in layered armor form, however, and simply covers the player's current headpiece. It's a simple piece, but in that vein, will appeal to those who like simpler looks for their hunter in Iceborne.

To craft the Skull Scarf, the following are required:

  • 2 Black Bandanas
  • 1 Research Commission Ticket+
  • 1 Shadowpierce Fang
  • 1 Deathweaver Membrane

The Black Bandanas are the special materials that players are going to have to actively seek out. They can be obtained from completing the event quest called Tears from Nirvana. After the updates for Iceborne effectively ended after the release of Fatalis and the movie collaboration quests, most event quests are permanently available. Therefore, no waiting around is required for Tears from Nirvana to become available.

The goal of the quest is to fight a Tempered Blackveil Vaal Hazak. There is an MR 100 requirement for starting the quest, so players who have already gotten that far in the game will likely find a Tempered Blackveil Vaal Hazak to be fairly easy to take down. That being said, it's always good to either have lots of nulberries or Effluvia Resistance level 3 active, as Blackveil will inflict players with effluvium buildup. The other thing to watch out for is that there is also a Furious Rajang roaming around the Rotten Vale in this quest, so it might also be wise to bring some dung pods to get it to leave if it starts to get in the way.

Finishing the event quest will result in being rewarded with a Black Bandana. There is a 1% chance that two will be rewarded, but given how low that is, running the quest twice will likely be required to get the required amount of Black Bandanas. At this point in the game, players will likely already have a Deathweaver Membrane and Shadowpierce Fang, as they can be obtained from standard Blackveil Vaal Hazak. If players are lacking them though, then breaking the stomach (or picking up a shiny drop) and head respectively will result in the best chance of receiving them.

What might be arguably more work to get than the Black Bandanas, is the Research Commission Ticket+. Players may have this before even starting Tears from Nirvana, but there are only 4 quests in the game that reward it.

The four quests are:

  • Hymn of Moon and Sun
  • Divine Surge
  • We Run This Town
  • The Place Where Winter Sleeps

Only the first three quests guarantee a reward of a Research Commission Ticket+, while the fourth one is the only one that doesn't need to be unlocked.

Hymn of Moon and Sun is unlocked at MR 125 and requires players to hunt both a Silver Rathalos and a Gold Rathian. Should players not defeat the Gold Rathian fast enough, they will have to fight the Silver Rathalos at the same time as neither monster will move from the starting area.

Divine Surge is unlocked at MR 150 and requires players to hunt a Tempered Kirin and a Tempered Namielle. This quest is exactly what it sounds like -- there's no real surprises.

We Run This Town is unlocked by completing every optional one to five star Master Rank quest and has players hunt a Tigrex, Nargacuga, Zinogre, Brachydios, and Glavenus in the Special Arena. This is essentially the Master Rank equivalent of The White Winds of the New World.

The Place Where Winter Sleeps tasks hunters to hunt down an Arch-Tempered Velkhana. This is no easy feat and only has a 24% chance of awarding a Research Commission Ticket+.

Given all the above options, Hymn of Moon and Sun is likely the easiest option, given it's unlocked the quickest and the monsters are not tempered and can be captured if timed correctly. Whichever options players choose, once they have the Research Commission Ticket+, as well as the Black Bandanas, Shadowpierce Fang, and Deathweaver membrane, they can go to the blacksmith and craft the Skull Scarf layered armor.
