Square Enix reveals the pricing for its standalone version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade and it's already controversial.

Thursday was a big day for Final Fantasy 7, with Square Enix making several key announcements. Two of those announcements, made during PlayStation's latest State of Play presentation, focused on Final Fantasy 7 Remake. The first was the announcement of a new DLC chapter starring Yuffie and the second was confirmation of a PS5 version of the game named Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade. It's now confirmed that the standalone PS5 release of Intergrade will cost a hefty $70.

Pricing for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade's PS5 release was shared shortly after the conclusion of the State of Play presentation. It confirmed a $69.99 for either the physical or digital standalone version of Final Fantasy 7 Intergrade. There's also a Digital Deluxe version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade that includes a digital artbook, mini-soundtrack, and other content, which will retail for $89.99. Intergrade will also include the Yuffie DLC in all versions of the bundle.

The PS5 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake will have substantial improvements compared to the PS4 version of the game. The game's visuals will be significantly improved, with better textures and lighting changes. Options for either a 4K resolution mode or a 60fps mode will also be available. There were also some odd changes, like Cloud being notably more muscled. Those who own Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS4 will be able to upgrade to PS5 for free, but will have to buy the Yuffie DLC separately.

The concern regarding the $70 price tag for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade is really just its part in a larger ongoing conversation. Some publishers are already shifting the default price of games released for next-gen consoles to $70, something many gamers think isn't good. As such, Square Enix making Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade $70 is evidence of the publisher joining this effort to raise game prices.

On a pure evaluation of value, it's difficult to add up the numbers without knowing what the Yuffie DLC will cost on its own. That said, Final Fantasy 7 Remake is just $30 on Amazon and other retailer websites right now. The Yuffie DLC would have to be $40 to bring the total cost up to $70, which seems unlikely.

Suffice to say, PS5 gamers buying the standalone version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will be paying a premium. Those upgrading from PS4 will likely be saving money, though it's dependent on the Yuffie DLC's pricing. Square Enix hasn't explained this price increase, and likely won't. That may just be the price of buying a next-gen console like the PS5.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade releases June 10 on PS5.
