The bosses of Valheim are known to be very difficult, especially if the player hasn't crafted the right items. Bonemass is definitely no exception.

Gather the Jarls, Karls, and Thralls; it's time to play some Valheim! The game continues to break sales records as it soars in popularity. Its new takes on the survival game genre alongside its Viking atmosphere are making players fall in love, and it's easy to see why.

Eventually, all players will end up needing to fight Bonemass to advance in the game. Despite being the third boss players have to fight, most consider it to be the hardest to defeat in the game. However, this battle can be made a little bit easier with some preparation and knowledge going into it.

10 Use A Weapon That Deals Blunt Damage

Bonemass is actually resistant to all other types of damage, with the exception of blunt damage, so it's vital to make sure to bring the right weapons to battle. While a mace or even a torch is capable of doing the job, there is still a better option.

Stagbreaker is not just one of the best weapons in the game, but it also deals blunt damage. Crafting this fierce warhammer will make this fight incredibly easier for anyone involved.

9 Bring A Bow Along

Many of Bonemass's attacks require Vikings to run to a safe distance so they aren't utterly destroyed by his poisonous fury. This makes bringing a Bow to the fight that much more important. It's worth noting too that both Blobs and Draugr are weak to fire damage. Since Bonemass can summon Blobs, having Fire Arrows on deck can make the fight much easier.

8 Craft Iron Gear

While most of Bonemass's damage is dealt through Poison and not direct hits, having a full set of Iron Armor can still be incredibly useful. As Iron comes from the Swamp Biome, players will want to hunt some down and get to crafting before taking on the boss.

If players can make their way to the Sunken Crypt, they can find an excellent source of Iron to use for crafting. There are muddy scrap piles that can be harvested there. Keep in mind that no one has to completely clear out the scrap piles right away. It's possible to leave holes in the middle to snipe enemies through.

7 Eat A Good Meal

It's important to have a hearty meal before setting out to battle literal monsters. Not just because warriors need a full stomach, but because mechanically food offers health bonuses to players! Meat-based foods provide the largest boosts, so that is what comes recommended to eat. Cooked meat, turnip stew, and Sausages should all do the trick.

6 Come Well Rested And Comfortable

It's important for warriors to feel comfortable and well-rested before heading out into the swamps to fight Bonemass. Mechanically, Vikings that have a higher comfort meter will have their health and stamina stay up longer.

Considering how much poison damage Bonemass is able to deal at any given time, it becomes even more important to make sure players understand how to make their characters comfortable.

5 Bring Along Friends

While it's possible to play Valheim in single-player, it becomes much easier (and way more fun) to gather up a group of friends to play. More weapons in the battle means more damage, it's simple mathematics, and with Bonemass being one of the hardest bosses in the game it's best to get any help possible. Set up a dedicated server and take this monster down.

4 Make Poison Resistance Mead

Experts aren't exaggerating when they say it's likely impossible to defeat Bonemass without the help of Poison Resistance Mead. Players should make sure they have a fermenter as soon as possible so they can get to crafting some.

It takes honey, thistle, neck tails, and coal to make the base for the mead, and then it needs to be put into the fermenter to make the mead. It's worth making sure teams bring at least three bottles of the mead with them. Two tend to be the amount needed for the fight, but it's better to be prepared in case something goes wrong.

3 Keep Near Dry Land

Fighting Bonemass is hard enough without having to add Leeches to the mix. The area to summon him usually has plenty of space to work with, but crafty players can use a Hoe to flatten out the land and make it so the water is no longer an issue in the fight at all. It can take a bit of patience, but it tends to be worth it to make the fight a little easier.

2 Understand His Attacks

Players that are able to recognize Bonemass's three attacks will have a far easier time facing him in battle.

  • Swiping In Front Of His Body With His Right Hand - This deals heavy physical damage while also poisoning players. It's quite slow and should be easy to dodge.
  • Throwing Piles Of Slime That Make Blobs - Dodging the giant piles of sludge can be a pain but the real issue is taking out the Blobs they summon. Since they're weak against Fire Damage, wacking them with a Torch or shooting them with Fire Arrows will clear them quickly.
  • Bonemass Surrounds Himself With Poison Miasma - When Bonemass stars rocking back and forth, it's time to run away. The poison damage this area-of-effect causes looks slow at first but can have players down and out of the fight faster than expected.

1 Reap The Rewards

It's wonderful to advance through the game, but there are even better reasons to take down Bonemass. Not only does defeating him give players access to a new resistance power, but everyone involved in the fight will receive a Wishbone once he is defeated. The Wishbone is an incredibly useful item that every Viking surviving in purgatory wants access to, so get prepared and go out and get one for the squad!
