Fan reception to Skyward Sword's Switch port was mixed. While there are reasons to be happy, fans are also a little disappointed by it.

It had been over a year since Nintendo gave fans a true Direct, with many of the ones that were shown in that time either being a Partner Showcase or directed at a specific game. Many believed that the days of Nintendo Directs had come to an end, but that all changed on February 17th. During the most recent Direct, Nintendo revealed that The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword will be coming to the Switch.

While most fans of the game are excited to get to play it again and newcomers will finally get their chance to play this title, there are also some gamers that are disappointed by this reveal. Here are some of the pros and cons about Skyward Sword releasing on the Switch.

10 Reason Why Fans Are Excited: Newcomers Will Get To Play A Great Installment

There are a lot of games in the series and not everyone gets to play every installment. Whether it be due to the player not being invested in the franchise upon Skyward Sword's release or because they didn't have a Wii, there are lots of fans that missed out on this game. As this title had a lot of great things going for it, it's unfortunate that not everyone was able to experience it. Now that it's coming to Switch, all of the people that missed out on it before will get the chance to play it.

9 Reason Why Fans Are Disappointed: It's Being Released At Full Price

Nintendo has brought a lot of games from older consoles onto the Switch. While some are cheaper than others, most of them are sixty dollars, and Skyward Sword is no exception. Seeing as how the original version of the game was priced at fifty dollars upon release, it's not fair for Nintendo to charge even more for a game that's a decade old. Though some fans have defended Nintendo, saying that most games are that expensive these days, others think that it isn't worth the extra money.

8 Reason Why Fans Are Excited: The Gameplay Should Be Great With Joy-Con Controls

Skyward Sword was specifically designed for the Wii's Remote and Nunchuk controls. However, that doesn't mean it won't work better on the Switch. After showing the trailer for the game, Eiji Aonuma spoke a little bit about how the new version will be played.

Similar to the Wii's controllers, players can use the Joy-Cons to use Link's sword and shield. Seeing as how most gamers like how the Joy-Cons feel more, the experience should be better. And for those that don't use Joy-Cons, the game can also be played with using the regular buttons on the controllers they do have.

7 Reason Why Fans Are Disappointed: Other Games Should Come To Switch

Despite Skyward Sword being a great game, fans of the franchise can argue that there are other installments that deserve to be remastered on the Switch more. A lot of gamers have different opinions on what the best Zelda game is with Ocarina of TimeTwilight PrincessMajora's Mask, and The Wind Waker all being very popular. For fans that enjoyed these games more, it is understandable that they would prefer them to be remastered instead of Skyward Sword.

6 Reason Why Fans Are Excited: It's A Remaster

Rather than being a port, the upcoming version of Skyward Sword is a remaster, improving the visual quality of the original game. It looks much better in HD and fans can't wait to explore an even more beautiful Skyloft, see the characters in a better light, and discover any small changes in the environment that had been made. Though it'd be nice if Nintendo announced a few other ways that they've improved Skyward Sword, this is already worth it for some fans.

5 Reason Why Fans Are Disappointed: They Want To Know More About Breath Of The Wild's Sequel

A lot of Nintendo fans' most highly anticipated game is the sequel to Breath of the Wild, despite them knowing very little about the title, include its title. They hoped to finally receive some news during the Nintendo Direct, but received the reveal of Skyward Sword instead. While many gamers are happy that the game will be available, few are thrilled to have to wait even longer for announcements on a game they've been hoping to play since 2017.

4 Reason Why Fans Are Excited: They Can Play It Wherever They Want

Up until now, this game had only been available on the Wii and the Wii U. Neither of these consoles allowed gamers to play anywhere they wanted, but the Switch does. From the system's launch, players have been thrilled to experience console games on the go and they can now feel the same joy with Skyward Sword. Though it may not seem as revolutionary as it did a few years ago, it's games like this that show how great the Switch is.

3 Reason Why Fans Are Disappointed: It's Not Part Of A Collection

For Super Mario's 35th anniversary, three of the franchise's greatest gamesSuper Mario 64Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy, were put on the Switch as a collection. 2021 marks The Legend of Zelda's 35th anniversary and fans hoped that the series would receive the same treatment.

However, due to no such announcement being made and Skyward Sword releasing on its own, it seems that Nintendo may not give these fans what they want. Though a collection could still happen with other games in the series, such as Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess, it is unfortunate that Skyward Sword will not be part of it.

2 Reason Why Fans Are Excited: It's One Of The Most Beloved Titles

There are many great Zelda games out there, but not all of them will appeal to everyone. Those that enjoy the stories that the games provide probably liked Ocarina of Time more than Breath of the Wild, which was great for fans of open world titles. There are also players that would prefer to play 2D games or a specific art style. Skyward Sword does a good job at balancing the many different types of games the series has had. It has a great story, revealing a lot of the franchise's lore, an art style that feels like a combination between previous installments, and some of the gameplay mechanics were brought into Breath of the Wild. It's hard to be a fan of the series and not like this game.

1 Reason Why Fans Are Disappointed: Others Are Getting Too Excited

While not necessarily a disappointment right now, this could be the biggest one when the game comes out. Getting excited about a game releasing is one thing, but speculating that new content is coming with it may get fans' hopes too high. Nintendo has barely talked about this release, yet so many are certain that it will get similar treatment to Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition's Future Connected. Nothing is for certain yet, and if a new dungeon or new bosses don't come with this remaster, many fans are going to be disappointed. It may be best to wait until more is announced before getting too excited.
