Great Spiritvein Gems are a late game item in Iceborne that can be fairly difficult to come by but are necessary for augmenting high level gear.

Players who reached the endgame of Monster Hunter World's base game found themselves trying to farm certain streamstones to augment their endgame gear. Then Iceborne came around and rendered late game weapons from the base game relatively worthless. Players would again be able to augment their gear once they got to the end of Iceborne, but now they needed Spiritvein gems, and Great Spiritvein Gems at that for the highest level gear. Great Spiritvein Gems are generally fairly difficult to get, but thankfully, some event quests introduced late in Monster Hunter World:Iceborne's lifespan have made it easier to acquire them.

The primary way to get Great Spiritvein Gems, and the only way before certain event quests dropped, is through the Guiding Lands. The Guiding Lands is an unlockable 6th area of the game that is unlocked upon defeating the final boss of Iceborne's main campaign. It is split into 4, later 6, separate regions that can each "level up," which increases the strength and or/type of the monsters found in the region.

At first each region can only be leveled up to level 4 until the player reaches MR 49, then they can complete the quest Sleep Now in the Fire, which will allow regions to be upgraded to level 5. Then at MR 69, the quest Big Burly Bash can be taken to raise the regional level cap to 6. Then finally at MR 99, the quest To the Very Ends with You is available, which will raise the level cap to 7. Fighting monsters in the Guiding Lands also is one of the quicker ways to raise MR rating.

Once a region can be raised to level 7, Great Spiritvein Gems can be obtained. Hunting monsters that only reside in a specific region is the best way to raise that region's level. Make sure to collect tracks and basically do anything else that rewards research points for accomplishing, such as trapping the monster or breaking its parts. Once the region is at level 7, players will want to track down or lure out certain monsters, usually Elder Dragons, to the level 7 region. The only non-Elder Dragon monsters that drop Great Spiritvein Gems in level 7 regions are Rajang, Seething Bazelgeuse, Savage Deviljho, Stygian Zinogre, Gold Rathian, and Silver Rathalos. Gold Rathian and Silver Rathalos are only unlocked in the Guiding Lands by leveling up the Wildspire region and the Coral region respectively to level 6.

A region being at level 7 will cause most of its residents to become tempered. Any tempered versions of the above monsters or Elder Dragons can drop Great Spiritvein Gems. They will drop "shinies" throughout the hunt that can be picked up and each has a 3% chance of being a Great Spiritvein Gem. The drop rate is the same for carving or capturing the monster.

While the 3% drop rate could be fairly frustrating for the acquisition of Great Spiritvein Gems, Capcom thankfully introduced an alternative. Three event quests will now also reward the player with Great Spirtvein Gems.

These quests are:

The quests still require an MR of 100 or more though. The first two quests have a 100% chance of rewarding a Great Spiritvein Gem upon completion, while the third has an 8% chance of doing so. Ode to Destruction will have players hunt a Tempered Ruiner Nergigante, Mew Are Number One! has a Tempered Furious Rajang to hunt, and Tears from Nirvana has a Tempered Blackveil Vaal Hazak to hunt. Ode to Destruction also has an 8% chance of rewarding a second gem, while Mew Are Number One! only has a 1% chance of awarding a second one. However, Mew Are Number One! also can reward Astral Melding Tickets which can be melded back in a hub for rare decorations, so doing this quest can potentially kill two birds with one stone.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
