A fan of Horizon: Zero Dawn shared her cosplay in celebration of the game’s release one year ago today. Though many players are disappointed by the absence of the sequel at the PlayStation State of Play earlier this week, this remarkably accurate portrayal of the series' main character is a treat for Horizon: Zero Dawn fans.
Horizon was released in 2017 and it quickly grabbed the industry’s attention with its massive machines, frenetic combat, and intriguing post-apocalyptic setting. Critics praised the graphics and worldbuilding while noting that the open-world formula felt hauntingly similar to other titles. Nevertheless, Horizon was hailed as one of the great PlayStation exclusive darlings, scoring an 89 on Metacritic and sparking a new fan-base for developer Guerilla Games.

One of the game’s biggest strengths was its story, with a twisting plot and an interesting cast of characters. Fans were excited to learn that the story would continue in Horizon: Forbidden West, a direct sequel that was announced in the summer of 2020. Though Forbidden West is rumored to have been delayed, that summer teaser confirmed that the next Horizon game would center around the first game’s protagonist, Aloy.
An outcast of the Nora tribe, Aloy’s growth into a hunter and a hero is the driving force of the plot in Horizon: Zero Dawn. For players who may not know what she looks like: just look above. Cosplayer lady_nilin captures the essence of the character with her recognizable red hair, her signature staff she uses in combat, and an extremely well-detailed Nora hunter outfit. Players will spend a lot of time tracking and hiding in bushes while hunting, as depicted in this talented cosplayer’s photoshoot.
Lady_nilin posted these photos on the four-year anniversary of Horizon: Zero Dawn’s launch, hopeful that the developers will announce anything related to the sequel. At the time of writing, nothing has been revealed yet, though Forbidden West is expected to release this year. The development of AAA titles is becoming an ever-more precarious business, and fans only hope that Guerilla Games will take the time it needs to do Aloy’s story justice.
Aloy is voiced by Ashley Burch, a prolific voice actress with iconic roles in Borderlands and many others under her belt. The teaser trailer for the sequel featured a voice-over from Burch, and it has been confirmed that the actress will reprise her role. The original actors are expected to voice returning characters as well, though there is no confirmation at this time that this will be the case.
Horizon: Zero Dawn is available on PC and PS4.
