The God of Thunder's latest MCU adventure, Thor: Love and Thunder, is currently underway with Chris Hemsworth, director Taika Waititi and the rest of the cast and crew gathered down in Australia right now. And now there is a hint that a veteran of the Thor movies might be returning with his character seemingly returning from the dead.
Chris Hemsworth recently posted some photos on Instagram of an epic 80s-style party he attended. Among the photos is one with Hemsworth hanging out with Matt Damon and Heimdall himself, Idris Elba. Recent set photos confirm that Damon will indeed be reprising his role from Thor: Ragnarok as the "Fake Loki" in the new sequel. With Elba hanging out with two cast members from Thor: Love and Thunder, it's not a stretch to think that he will also be returning to the franchise.

This would be a bit of a surprising development as Heimdall was killed in Avengers: Infinity War by Thanos. Of course, he would not be the only surprising character return for the fourth Thor movie as Natalia Portman will be reprising her role as Jane Foster with rumors of her becoming Lady Thor in the movie. She will join Hemsworth as well as Tesse Thompson, returning as Valkyrie. Christian Bale is also confirmed to be playing the villain of the movie, Borr the God Butcher.
Obviously, some photos on Instagram of actors hanging out together is hardly any confirmation of Elba's involvement in Thro: Love and Thunder. In fact, Elba is already scheduled to be in Australia filming George Miller's Three Thousand Years of Longing with Tilda Swinton. But this was not the first time Heimdall was almost brought back into the MCU as there were initial plans for him to appear in Avengers: Endgame where he would face-off with Tony Stark when Stark tried to steal the Reality Stone from Asgard. His presence is also hinted at in the Loki trailer so it is not so farfetched.
The potential return of Heimdall brings up a lot of questions about the storyline of Thor: Love and Thunder, as well as which other dead characters might return. This also brings up an issue that often plagues the MCU in that character deaths are often undone. Bringing Heimdall back just adds to the feeling that death has no stakes in these movies. On the other hand, Heimdall could simply be returning in a flashback which would give Elba one last chance to shine in the role.
Thor: Love and Thunder is expected in theaters on May 6, 2022.
