Square Enix unveiled Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade at the February 2021 PlayStation State of Play, and with it a new Final Fantasy 7 character named Sonon Kusakabe. The Intergrade trailer the developer aired didn't give too many specifics on who Sonon is, but it did reveal that he would be Yuffie's partner-in-crime during the new chapter this PS5 upgrade plans on giving her. He'll be helping her to break into Midgar and steal Materia for the glory of Wutai, their home nation.
Now, Square Enix has gone ahead and released a bunch of new Intergrade screen captures on its Final Fantasy 7 Remake Twitter account, and right on the heels of some new Yuffie screenshots came ones featuring Sonon. There are only two, but they do show off the character's face and overall design. As seen in the Intergrade trailer, Sonon's weapon of choice looks to be a modified quarterstaff, the same kind of weapon that Aerith prefers, only he uses it to bludgeon.

However, more important than Sonon's screenshots is the information in the tweet. Through it, Square Enix gives more details on what players can expect from Sonon when Final Fantasy 7 Intergrade releases. According to the details, Sonon was trained under Godo Kisaragi, Yuffie's father, and harbors a deep resentment for Shinra over the devastation they caused Wutai. In Intergrade, Godo has assigned Sonon to work under Yuffie in infiltrating Midgar.
Judging from both the new information and the Intergrade trailer, Sonon lost his sister to Shinra during the Wutai War. The new details claim he has a deep hatred for them, while the trailer sees Yuffie telling him that "she's not his sister," a response made to his claim that Shinra — and likely the people that submit to them — "deserve what's coming to them." The character obviously has a chip on his shoulder that seems like it could belie his otherwise professional nature.
The last couple of new characters that Final Fantasy 7 Remake introduced didn't play that much of a major role in the story, but they did turn out to be a hit among many fans. Considering how attached Sonon is to Yuffie, he should certainly have just as much, if not more screen time than they did, depending on how long the new Yuffie episode lasts. Hopefully, he'll be able to use it to establish himself as a likable addition to the franchise.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade launches June 10, exclusively for PS5.
