The latest update released for Valheim, which was intended to fix issues with dedicated servers, has players reporting new issues.

Iron Gate’s Viking-themed procedurally generated survival game Valheim is one of the latest titles to experience a surge of popularity. Released in early access on February 2, 2021, the base-building game offers a compelling single and multiplayer experience that led to Valheim being Steam’s top-seller for the entirety of February.

That said, the game is still in early access and has received regular updates since its release. The latest update for Valheim came out on March 2 and, according to the patch notes, the developers focused primarily on fine tuning many aspects of dedicated server functionality, which allows friends to play or fight together in the game.

While the changes were intended to fix many of the connection issues users have been experiencing while attempting to log in to a Valheim dedicated server, on the contrary, it seems that a greater number of players are now having connection issues. Players have made multiple posts on Reddit, Steam, and the game’s official Discord to report that they have been repeatedly kicked from their dedicated servers or can’t connect at all.

Iron Gate has a public bug tracker for Valheim, and the issue has also been raised there. So the game’s developers are undoubtedly aware of the problem, but as yet there has been no word on what might be causing the issue or when a fix can be expected.

In the meantime, some players have found that rebooting the server, uninstalling and reinstalling the server software, or changing “-public 0” to “-public 1” in the launch script has fixed their connection problems. However, these methods haven’t worked for everybody, or they have allowed some gamers to connect to their dedicated private server while their friends still cannot. Many Valheim players may have to simply wait for Iron Gate to release a new patch before being able to play with their friends again.

The update that seems to have caused the dedicated server connection issues, Patch 0.147.3, also added a few minor game fixes. These included making the merchant Haldor’s head turn more smoothly, decreasing the procreation rate of tamed wolves, lowering the chance of boss trophies talking, and localization updates.

Valheim offers a full single-player experience, and it is possible to make progress in the game and take down bosses solo. However, the game was designed to be primarily a co-op title, with friends joining together to explore the massive world of Valheim, build complex bases and structures, and sail the vast seas.

Valheim is available in Early Access on PC.
