Offering a VR zombie shooter that allowed players to take down the undead with immersive, real-life movements, Vertigo Games' Arizona Sunshine quickly became one of 2017's most prevalent virtual reality experiences. It seems the studio behind the title intends to build on its success and continue to bring expansive games to VR platforms, revealing today that it's gearing up to release a new zombie-focused project called After the Fall.
Announced alongside a cinematic teaser on the PlayStation YouTube channel, the upcoming release is another post-apocalyptic first-person shooter that touts four-player co-op as one of its major selling points. It will allegedly debut on PlayStation VR, Oculus, and Steam this Summer and boasts more of the chaotic action present within the studio's first VR project.

As for the trailer, it offers a brief glimpse at the world After the Fall takes place in, depicting an icy landscape filled with zombified hordes and other grotesque monsters. If the footage is anything to go off, it seems players will be able to wield a multitude of weapons, with one survivor brandishing dual handguns and another utilizing a wrist-mounted rocket launcher. There will be more undead threats than its spiritual predecessor as well, with the teaser showing enemies that can crawl on walls, armored opponents, and a colossal zombie known as a Smasher that tries to kill the protagonists during the trailer's action-packed climax.
According to After the Fall's official website, players will be encouraged to find a unique playstyle, with the game offering a variety of weapons that can be wielded using real-life movements. It will also boast an "evolving post-apocalyptic city," which Vertigo Games claims will mean "no mission plays the same way twice." Although the mechanic isn't discussed in detail, it seems the concept will have players' actions reflect on the in-game world, with the result affecting how scenarios play out. A similar idea is currently featured in Steam's early access dinosaur shooter, Second Extinction.
As for the backdrop of the game, it will take place in an alternate timeline where zombies overtook the world in the 1980s. The events of the game are based in LA 20 years after the outbreak, with players scavenging for supplies and other resources in the ruins of the city. It sounds like a fun twist on the standard zombie tale that's sure to come with plenty of surprises. Comparisons to titles like Left 4 Dead and the upcoming Back 4 Blood have been frequent in the early reactions to After the Fall, with the game's four-player co-op focus definitely making it one to watch for VR enthusiasts.
After the Fall is scheduled to release this Summer on PC and PlayStation 4.
