During the Mr. Sakurai Presents livestream today, the director of Super Smash Bros. talked about the process behind creating the reveal trailers.

Ever since the launch of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2018 for the Switch, Nintendo has not stopped supporting the title with DLC characters that come from all over the video game space. From well-known icons such as Sephiroth from Final Fantasy 7 and Steve from Minecraft to lesser-known characters like Min Min from ARMS, there's a lot of content here that is more than worth the cost of admission.

And with each new character comes a brand-new reveal trailer that shows off some of the character's backstory and how they will fight their opponents in battle. Super Smash Bros. fans typically tend to enjoy these reveal trailers, as they're very well done, for the most part.

And in the latest 'Mr. Sakurai Presents' livestream for the Switch fighting game that happened today, the director of Super Smash Bros. revealed more information on the new fighters coming to the game, Pyra and Mythra. However, towards the end of the presentation, Sakurai dropped some details on how the reveal trailers are made for each character. He starts off by mentioning that the reveal trailer for Pyra and Mythra was a departure from the series because Sakurai didn't write it himself, which has never happened before.

The character reveals for Super Smash Bros. usually starts off with Sakurai writing a script and then after that, the Smash team works with CG and animation studios to make the actual "movies." However, for this latest one, the developers of Xenoblade Chronicles, Monolith Soft, created the CG parts of the trailer, as well as the script. Sakurai mentioned d during the presentation that he found himself impressed with the quality of the cutscenes in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, which made him felt confident in the talent of the game studio. Of course, Sakurai had to review the CG video to make sure it was as high of a quality as the previous character reveal trailers but his involvement was still pretty minimal.

As for the gameplay section of the reveal trailer, that was created by the Smash Ultimate development team using a script that Sakurai put together. He also oversaw the creation of the audio track that was used for the big reveal; besides the CG that was done by Monolith, Sakurai and his team had the same workload at the end of the day.

Mythra and Pyra will be available for download later today via the Nintendo Switch eShop. These characters act as the fourth fighter slot for the second fighter's pass, with two more characters yet to be revealed. The entire pass can be purchased for $29.99, or players can just buy Pyra/Mythra for $5.99, and that comes with the new stage, new music, and a few other goodies.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available for the Nintendo Switch.
