Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez is reportedly leading the charge to bring the franchise back to the big screen with a new film.

There hasn't been much talk of a new Star Trek film since 2016's Star Trek Beyond, which slightly underperformed compared to expectations. While fans have been somewhat divided on the reboot Trek films, the brand itself has still been going strong with multiple new shows releasing and being well received in the time since, leading many to wonder when they were due for another big-screen space adventure.

While there have been some rumors of various Star Trek films being worked on and canceled, nothing has actually made it to the point of an official announcement or trailer. However, just recently, it would seem another project has been confirmed to be in the works. Kalinda Vazquez, a writer for Star Trek: Discovery has reportedly been asked to write an original screenplay for Paramount set in the Trek universe.

Kalinda Vazquez, who was named after the Star Trek character 'Kelinda,' is also known for her work as a co-executive producer on Fear the Walking Dead, a spin-off from AMC's highly successful adaptation of The Walking Dead. According to Deadline, the developing Trek film is Kalinda's original concept and she has signed a blind deal with Paramount, meaning she will have some freedom in deciding what the final product will look like. J.J Abrams' production company Bad Robot will produce the new project.

Considering the generally positive reception for Discovery, it would seem that Vazquez is a good choice to lead a brand new Trek project. Previous attempts included high-profile figures like Quentin Tarantino and Noah Hawley, but the former eventually stepped down from the project and the latter moved on after Paramount put a hold on his film, wanting to go a different direction.

Other Trek projects, in the meantime, have included shows like the animated comedy series Lower Decks, which focuses on characters with the less glamorous jobs in Starfleet, as well as Star Trek: Picard, a nostalgia-heavy continuation of The Next Generation, complete with Sir Patrick Stewart as the lead. These projects have been fairly popular with fans and show that the interest in the franchise certainly hasn't diminished in recent years.

So, hopefully with such a strong base for this new film and the talent behind it, the next Star Trek film will be worthy of the franchise's legacy. Whatever ends up happening, fans will hopefully have some more Trek news to chew on very soon.

Star Trek: Discovery is now available on Paramount Plus.
