Remedy Entertainment's CEO reveals that its two unannounced projects in collaboration with Epic Games will take place in the same universe.

Remedy Entertainment is currently working on several different projects, with the studio split into four teams developing five games. The developers behind Control have started work on a new AAA project, while a second team is hard at work on an action-packed sequel to Crossfire known as CrossfireX, and a third is developing Vanguard, which will allegedly be an ambitious free-to-play co-op title.

A fourth team is working on two unannounced projects, with both games being developed for console and PC in collaboration with Epic Games. Although there are few details on what the two titles will be about, a new interview between GamesIndustry.biz and Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala has shed more light on the mysterious projects.

According to the publication, Virtala spoke very briefly about the scope and narrative of both games, clarifying that they "are set in a shared universe." Allegedly, one will be a large-scale, AAA title and the other a smaller experience, with the team wanting to create an IP that they can revisit through multiple releases. "With the project we're doing with Epic, it's in a world we want players to spend more time in," Virtala claims during the interview, going on to reveal that Remedy hopes to continue exploring "the world and the brand" through more than one release.

The idea of pursuing this ambitious new IP appears to check off another goal Remedy is aiming to achieve, with Virtala telling GamesIndustry.biz that the studio intends to build multiple expanding brands going forward. The pair of shared universe projects definitely appear to fit that bill. Meanwhile, Remedy hopes its new live-service cooperative game Vanguard will also develop into an expansive, long-running brand that it can continue to cultivate post-launch.

The interview delves deeper into exactly what Remedy intends to build with the Vanguard project, claiming it will look to offer an innovative take on the co-op shooter that lifts the genre to new heights. Players also know that the company is working on a new release set in both the Control and Alan Wake universe, continuing both franchises' stories following their official merger in Control's AWE DLC last year. There's no word on when the game will hit shelves, although considering Control released in 2019, it's likely not on the cards anytime soon. CrossfireX appears to be the next major release for the team, with the high-octane first-person shooter slated to debut sometime later this year. The title is a sequel to Crossfire, returning to the franchise's world while bringing the explosive brand of combat Remedy has become known for.
