Making and eating foods is an important chore in Valheim for players looking to boost their health and stamina pools and to heal from injuries.

In Valheim, players are pitted against a harsh world filled with aggressive beasts and dangerous climates. In order to negate some of the damage from enemies and gain more stamina, players should eat the best food they can at every level.

Unlike many other survival games, players are not required to manage hungry or thirst with food and drink. The food system is designed to be all positive benefit to players; the better the food eaten, the bigger of a health and stamina pool they will have. Since the food in Valheim has no down sides, there's really no reason for players not to have some tasty treats in their inventory at all times.

Players can eat three kinds of food at a time. These three food slot must be filled with different foods; players can eat more than one of the same type of food. Therefore diversity in their meals is necessary to get all the benefits.

At the beginning of the game, players will have limited options as to the foods they can get a hold of. The best foods will give players extra health, extra stamina, will heal their wounds over time, and will last for the longest. While in the meadows, before defeating the first Valheim boss Eikthyr, players will only have access to raspberries, cooked meat, grilled neck tail, and red mushrooms.

  • Raspberries - raise HP by: 10, heal 1 HP per second, raise stamina by 20, lasts for 600 seconds
  • Cooked meat - raise HP by: 40, heal 2 HP per second, raise stamina by 30, lasts for 1200 seconds
  • Grilled neck tail - raise HP by: 35, heal 2 HP per second, raise stamina by 20, lasts for 1000 seconds
  • Red Mushroom - raise HP by: 15, heal 1 HP per second, raise stamina by 20, lasts for 600 seconds
  • Honey (from bees) - raise HP by: 20, heal 5 HP per second, raise stamina by 20, lasts for 300 seconds

So the best food combination for a new player would be honey, cooked meat, and a grilled neck tail. Players can gather honey by building bee hives in Valheim, get raw meat to cook from deer and boar, and neck tails from necks, which hang out around water sources in the Meadows.

In order to cook them, players just need to build a fire in their Valheim home, then build a Cooking Station over it. After killing Eikthyr, however, players will get access to even more types of food.

The Black Forest opens up more food choices. Once players have mined some tin with their antler pickaxe, they can make a cauldron and a Valheim fermenter to make better food and their first potions. The foods in the Black Forest are:

  • Blueberries - raise HP by: 15, heal 1 HP per second, raise stamina by 20, lasts for 600 seconds
  • Yellow mushroom - raise HP by: 20, heal 1 HP per second, raise stamina by 20, lasts for 600 seconds
  • Carrot - raise HP by: 15, heal 1 HP per second, raise stamina by 15, lasts for 600 seconds
  • Carrot soup (cauldron) - raise HP by: 20, heal 2 HP per second, raise stamina by 60, lasts for 1500 seconds
  • Queens jam (cauldron) - raise HP by: 30, heal 2 HP per second, raise stamina by 40, lasts for 1200 seconds
  • Cooked fish (must purchase the fishing pole from the Valheim trader) - raise HP by: 45, heal 2 HP per second, raise stamina by 25, lasts for 1200 seconds

If players have found the trader in Valheim's massive map and can reliably get fish to cook, the best combination for Black Forest food would be Cooked Fish, Carrot Soup, and Queen's Jam. Both the jam and soup are made with the cauldron, which needs 10 tin and a fire. Queen's Jam is made from 8 raspberries and 8 blueberries. In order to get carrots, players must gather carrot seeds from the Black Forest and plant them at home with a cultivator, which is made from bronze and wood. Once the carrots have grown, it takes three carrots and a red mushroom to make the soup in the cauldron.

If players cannot find the trader or are having trouble learning how to fish in Valheim, then next best meal would be Grilled Neck Tail, Carrot Soup, and Queen's Jam.

The swamps give players access to Draugr and turnip seeds. From these, players can make:

  • Sausages - raise HP by: 60, heal 3 HP per second, raise stamina by 40, lasts for 1600 seconds
  • Turnip stew - raise HP by: 50, heal 2 HP per second, raise stamina by 50, lasts for 1600 seconds

Sausages are made from raw meat, thistles found in the swamp, and Draugr intestines. Turnip stew is made from growing turnips from seeds and mixing them with raw meat in the cauldron. Carrot Soup, Turnip stew, and Sausages make for an excellent meal for players looking for more stamina. Cooked fish, Turnip stew, and Sausages are better for those looking for more health.

Since the Mountain Biome doesn't offer any additional foods, players will need to head for the plains in order to get the next selection of foods. After defeating Moder, players will be able to begin processing the barley and other foods found in the plains.

After players build a Valheim artisan table, it will open up some of the best food in the game for players. Barley flour, which must be grown in the plains and processed in the Windmill, can be used to make bread, blood pudding, and lox meat pies.

  • Cooked lox meat - raise HP by: 70, heal 3 HP per second, raise stamina by 40, lasts for 2000 seconds
  • Blood pudding - raise HP by: 90, heal 4 HP per second, raise stamina by 50, lasts for 2400 seconds
  • Bread - raise HP by: 40, heal 2 HP per second, raise stamina by 70, lasts for 1800 seconds
  • Fish wraps - raise HP by: 60, heal 4 HP per second, raise stamina by 90, lasts for 2400 seconds
  • Lox meat pie - raise HP by: 80, heal 4 HP per second, raise stamina by 80, lasts for 2400 seconds
  • Cloudberries - raise HP by: 15, heal 1 HP per second, raise stamina by 25, lasts for 800 seconds

While lox can be tamed, they can also be made into great food and rugs for a player's home to up their comfort level.

For those brave enough to take on the sea, sea serpents can make some delicious and health-boosting foods. Raw Serpent Meat can be turned into:

  • Cooked serpent meat - raise HP by: 70, heal 3 HP per second, raise stamina by 40, lasts for 2000 seconds
  • Serpent stew - raise HP by: 80, heal 4 HP per second, raise stamina by 80, lasts for 2400 seconds

Arguably, the best combination of foods currently available in Valheim are:

  • Lox meat pie
  • Serpent stew
  • Blood pudding

This is subject to change, since Valheim is still updated and regularly expanded. Most likely, more foods will become available as the game grows.

Valheim is in early access for PC.
