One Zelda: Breath of the Wild fan discovered a secret, unused template shrine by digging through the game's files.

It's been almost four years since The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild launched alongside the Nintendo Switch. It ended up being one of the most critically acclaimed video games of all time and that is no easy feat. Even though it's been quite some time since the game was released out in the wild, players are still exploring and encountering new findings and tricks that continue to extend the longevity of this epic action-adventure title, such as this insane arrow trick shot.

Breath of the Wild was the first Zelda game to introduce shrines as the main puzzle components, instead of going the route of the traditional multi-tiered dungeons with an item and a boss at the end of it. The base game has a whopping total of 120 shrines to find and complete, and that's not even including the shrines from the downloadable expansion pass.

But it turns out that there's a secret unused shrine that was found within the game's files. Breath of the Wild fan Waikuteru posted a video to their YouTube channel this week that shows the hidden shrine. There's not going inside of it though, as it's just a template for a blessing shrine. Waikuteru says that since it is a template shrine, it can be much easier to mod extra shrines into the game without getting rid of existing ones now. It could've been possible that the Breath of the Wild developers planned on creating more shrines for the base game, but then ended up scrapping them or using them later for what would eventually be the DLC.

It's always interesting to see fans dive into a video game's files and check out what was never implemented into the final product. Most likely, there are still other secrets hidden within Breath of the Wild's innards. It's only a matter of time until a fan discovers something even more exciting.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is currently available on the Nintendo Wii U and Switch. A sequel is currently in development for the Nintendo Switch but it is currently untitled. One of the few details that fans are speculating about is whether other antagonists besides Ganon will appear in Breath of the Wild 2. Having a new villain or returning baddie would certainly be a nice change of pace for the series since Ganon ends up being the main villain most of the time.
