Zack Snyder's Justice League is finally arriving this month, but before it does fans can get another peek of the upcoming DC superhero film with a new 30-second ad on Twitch. The ad features new footage and a pretty good look at the movie's main villain, Darkseid.
Darkseid is one of DC's biggest and most ruthless villains. He's been around in the comics for decades and even served as the inspiration for one of Marvel's main supervillains, the mad titan Thanos. Created by comics legend Jack Kirby, Darkseid is the tyrannical ruler of the desolate planet Apokolips. He seeks to conquer the universe and eliminate all hope and free will by attempting to unravel the Anti-Life Equation: a transcendental mathematical formula that gives its user complete control over all living beings. Darkseid was originally created to be the main antagonist in Kirby's Fourth World comics series before becoming one of Superman's biggest villains and a reoccurring antagonist for the Justice League.

In the 30-second promo for Zack Snyder's Justice League, Darkseid, played by actor Ray Porter, menacingly narrates over the footage. We see him sitting on a throne as he laments that he has turned "100,000 worlds to dust" looking for those who robbed him of his glory. He then goes on to threaten that he will "stride across their bones" before finally declaring that all of existence will be his. Sounds like a pretty bad guy.
Some of the footage in this promo shows a scene that was briefly featured in the 2017 theatrical release of Justice League, where Darkseid's army of Parademons and his chief enforcer Steppenwolf (Ciaran Hinds) attempted to conquer earth thousands of years ago. During this invasion, Steppenwolf and his army used three 'Mother Boxes,' mysterious super-computers with incredible power. The invasion was foiled by an alliance of Amazons, Olympian Gods, Atlanteans, and extraterrestrial allies.
This coalition agreed to hide the three Mother Boxes in different locations on earth. In the 2017 release of Justice League, Steppenwolf returns to earth after the death of Superman (Henry Cavill) to seek out the Mother Boxes. In that film, the Mother Boxes are shown to possess incredible power. They are used to resurrect Superman and one of them was used to turn Victor Stone into the hero Cyborg (Ray Fisher).
A key difference with Snyder's four-hour re-release of Justice League is that Darkseid seems to have actually been present during the invasion thousands of years ago, and based on his narration in the ad, he seems pretty upset about how it went. In the 2017 release of the film, Darkseid only alluded to and Steppenwolf served as the primary antagonist. However, in the Snyder cut, Darkseid will take on the role of the main bad guy. It's unclear as to what Darkseid will use the Mother Boxes for, but it certainly sounds like he's seeking the anti-life equation.
Zack Snyder's Justice League premieres on HBO Max, March 18th, 2021.
