Australian studio PlaySide, and US studio MGM announce a new Legally Blonde video game in the lead up to the 2022 movie Legally Blonde 3.

It has been 20 years since the ever-iconic Elle Woods was introduced to the world. While Reese Witherspoon has gone on to play several other roles, the world has never forgotten Elle Woods. For those who missed Legally Blonde, the story follows stereotypically girly Elle Woods in her journey to become a successful lawyer. The movie is a surprisingly genuine depiction of the prejudice women face in male-dominated fields. Now, Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios is allowing triple-A developer PlaySide Studios to create a Legally Blonde mobile game.

PlaySide Studios is a Melbourne-based studio that typically creates free-to-play mobile games. The studio is known for its creation of various movie-based games, as well as the Dumb Ways to Die game. Currently, the studio's crowning achievement is the creation of virtual reality game The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners, which has been highly successful with the VR community. PlaySide has released more than 50 games to this date across several platforms.

The Legally Blonde video game will be a free to play mobile game that employs match-3 style gameplay and follows the story of Elle Woods. The mobile game will center around both the first and second Legally Blonde movies. Currently it is unknown if Witherspoon will return for her role as Elle Woods in the game. The new game has an expected release date of 2021 and will be available for both iOS and Android.

A Legally Blonde video game could be a great move for MGM and PlaySide alike. With Legally Blonde 3 set to be released in 2022, the cross promotion is likely to be an effective way of reminding the public of the Legally Blonde franchise. The fact that Witherspoon will be reprising her role in the 2022 film is also an excellent sign that she may get involved with the video game.

However, some fans may be unconvinced. Knowing what PlaySide can do, it would have been nice to see a more complex take on a Legally Blonde game. The match-3 puzzle game has long been the cash cow of the mobile game world. Hopefully PlaySide can put a fresh new spin on the genre. It would be great to see more success for an Australian studio after Riot recently closed itse Australian office.

Still, many fans of Legally Blonde will likely be happy to see the franchise getting more attention and there have been admittedly well-polished match-3 games like Homescapes.

The Legally Blonde video game is expected to be released in 2021 for Android and IOS.
