The WWE knows what it is at this point. The odd, but appropriate moniker of sports entertainment fits it well. No longer does it have the mystique it had during the 80s and 90s, where its superstars felt larger than life. Now, wrestlers are allowed to pull back the curtain a bit, and share a bit of who they are with fans. It turns out many of them are gamers. One of WWE's most popular tag teams, The New Day, are in that camp, and have revealed some new Mortal Kombat-inspired outfits.
Wrestling video games have been a staple since the earliest days of the medium. It's not a surprise that they would be popular. Essentially a fighting game with a diverse, unusual cast of characters all with their own backstory, wrestling games make sense. Not all wrestling games are winners, but there have been enough released that there are some solid options. It should come as no surprise then that wrestlers themselves are into video games as well.

The New Day, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods, have taken their love of video games and brought it to the WWE ring with a new set of Mortal Kombat-inspired threads. Going with a Scorpion and Sub-Zero combination, the two revealed the new look on Monday Night Raw, where Woods was scheduled to fight Shelton Benjamin in a preview of an upcoming tag team match between The New Day and Benjamin and his partner Cedric Alexander. The Mortal Kombat look is colorful, and a pretty good approximation of the classic outfits worn by Scorpion and Sub-Zero.
Xavier Woods has long been a fan of video games, and has worked it into his professional persona when he can. When not on camera for the WWE, Woods streams on Twitch, and will be a G4TV host when the network makes its return in 2021. Part of the reason why The New Day has such a strong fanbase is this relatable, and fun, part of their personas. Able to embrace their own personal love of games as part of their in-ring characters works with fans.
With the notion of kayfabe (the idea that the bad blood and rivalries seen in the ring is real) slowly dying, it has allowed wrestlers to open up and connect with fans more, instead of being essentially fictional characters with no personal life. A group of wrestlers joined Mario Maker endless expert streamer GrandPooBear for a Fall Guys stream, and the "out of character" banter between them is enjoyable. The New Day's outfits are an extension of that more personal approach, and they work great.
