The CW has revealed its lead actors for the upcoming live-action remake of The Powerpuff Girls. Dove Cameron from Liv & Maddie, Chloe Bennet of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. fame and Broadway actor Yana Perrault have been confirmed to star in the adaptation of the extremely popular Cartoon Network animated series.
Created by Craig McCracken, The Powerpuff Girls follows the crime-fighting trio Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. Made from “sugar, spice, and everything nice,” along with an accidental ingredient of Chemical X, the girls are born with superpowers and go up against the likes of Mojo Jojo and other evil villains in a mission to protect the Earth.

First announced as being in development in August 2020, The CW ordered a pilot of the Powerpuff Girls series in February 2021. While the original animated series centered on the heroes as young girls who were often called upon by the mayor of the city to fight evil characters, the live-action remake will portray the Powerpuff Girls as young women in their twenties who will be trying to come to terms with having lost their childhood to crime-fighting.
The CW has confirmed that Bennet, who played Quake in Agents of SHIELD, will be playing the role of Blossom, the pseudo leader of the group who always did things by the book. Her character arc will show her traumatized by all the actions the sisters had to live through as children and living with anxiety. Her aim will be to become a leader once again, but this time she wants to do things on her own terms. Cameron will play Bubbles, the sweet girl who was a favorite among the show’s viewers because of her gentle demeanor, which she obviously let go of when fighting the big bad villains. The remake will show her as a tougher adult who is out to recapture her lost fame.
Finally, Perrault has been cast as Buttercup, who was always the rebellious one in the group. She found ways to do things that weren’t always approved by her sisters, or even their father Professor Utonium. However, as an adult, she will be seen as someone who has tried to run away from her identity of being a superhero and has spent most of her life trying to be as anonymous as possible. It remains to be seen whether the powerful trio will reunite to protect the world from evil once again.
The Powerpuff Girls was originally created by McCracken in 1992, but its first pilot only aired on Cartoon Network in 1995. The series was then developed by the network and made its official debut in 1998, running for almost seven years before concluding with its final episode in March 2005. It won several awards during its run and was a favorite among younger children. The series was also adapted for the big screen in the form of a feature film titled The Powerpuff Girls Movie, which was released in 2002 and praised for its visuals. The upcoming remake is currently being penned by Heather Regnier of Veronica Mars and Diablo Cody of Juno.
The Powerpuff Girls is in development and will be coming soon to The CW.
