There are many unique weapons in Skyrim, but Stormfang has a storied history. Here's everything you need to know about this legendary greatsword.

While there are many unique weapons in the Elder Scrolls series, with many of them being found in Skyrim, one that is far older than many players realize is the unique greatsword called Stormfang. It has a powerful enchantment and it's fairly easy to obtain for even early-game characters, so there's no reason why players shouldn't grab this sword over the course of their adventures.

In order to obtain this sword, players need to first travel to Solstheim, the island that borders Skyrim and Morrowind. Then they'll need to track down the current owner of the sword, kill them in cold blood, and loot their corpse to take it for themselves. However, there is a lot more to this sword than first meets the eye, despite the fact that it looks fairly innocuous.

10 Only Appears In The Dragonborn DLC

Unless players have bought the Dragonborn DLC for original releases of the game, or bought the later Skyrim: Special Edition re-release, there is no way for players to obtain Stormfang at all. Unfortunately, if players are exploring Solstheim for the first time after first completing the main game and the Dawnguard DLC first, they may find that Stormfang is far weaker than would be desired, as it has the same base power as a Steel Greatsword.

9 It's The Same Sword That Appeared In Morrowind

What many players may not know, particularly if Skyrim is their first Elder Scrolls experience, is that Stormfang has appeared in the series before. Like in Skyrim, Stormfang appeared as a unique weapon in the Bloodmoon DLC for The Elder Scrolls III that takes players to Solstheim. Here, Stormfang is the weapon of choice of Ulfgar the Unending, a Nord who is over 500 years old and is looking for a way to reach Sovngarde. As a fun fact, he even appears in Sovngarde during the final main quest in Skyrim.

Unlike many other unique weapons in Skyrim, Stormfang is deceptively average-looking in appearance, having the same skin as a Steel Greatsword as well as the same damage stats. With this in mind, it is easy to see why some players may overlook it entirely or simply sell it off, as it isn't the most impressive sword players can find in the Dragonborn DLC.

While it may not be the best weapon around for most melee-focused characters, it is powerful enough to be useful for most early-game characters to take advantage of. It can at least help characters with a heavy Two-Handed investment obtain more powerful weapons, such as the Bloodskal Blade.

7 It Can Be Found In Brodir Grove

Just as it was found in the Brodir Grove in Morrowind, it is found in the exact same place in Skyrim, though it is found on the body of a nameless Reaver Lord rather than a named character with their own story. Unfortunately for low-level characters, Reaver Lords are no pushover, which can make this battle very difficult considering they are one of the few enemies that don't scale to the player's level and will present a decent challenge until around level 25.

6 Brodir Grove Has Historical Significance For The Nords

Although Brodir Grove is notable for being the location of Stormfang in two different games, its historical significance extends beyond the existence of this weapon. At some point several centuries before the events of Morrowind, Ulfgar's three companions were cursed to remain on Nirn as stone pillars and, while Ulfgar was able to kill the perpetrator, they were also afflicted in some way, resulting in their unnaturally long lives.

5 It Shock Enchantment Is Quite Powerful

Many weapons found in Skyrim, particularly those found on high-level enemies or in boss chests, will have an enchantment of some kind that is scaled to the player character's level. In the case of Stormfang, however, its Shock enchantment is significantly higher than most others that can be found at a low level, dealing 30 extra points of damage on top of its base weapon damage. This makes it one of the stronger starting weapons a player can obtain, so long as they can defeat the Reaver Lord who is wielding it.

4 It Is Worth A Lot Of Gold

Not only does Stormfang deal quite a lot of damage for how early in the game it can be obtained, but it is also worth quite a bit of gold if players decide they want to sell it off rather than keep it. While a regular steel greatsword has a value of a mere 90 septims, Stormfang is valued at a whopping 1175 septims.

Although players won't be able to get this exact value from selling it without investing in the Speech skill tree first, it can still be sold for an impressive amount of money should the player desperately need it.

3 It's One Of The Weaker Weapons For A Reaver Lord To Wield

Like bandits in Skyrim, the Reavers in Solstheim will carry leveled weapons depending on the player's level and what kind of Reaver they are. For Reaver Lords, much like Bandit Chiefs, this means using high-power weapons like the Ebony and Glass variety once the player hits a high enough level, though these do significantly more damage than Stormfang ever will, especially once the player hits a high enough level for these to spawn.

2 It's One Of A Few Unique Weapons That Can Be Disenchanted

For the most part, Skryim knows that a player may accidentally, or even purposefully, try to disenchant a unique item and lose it forever, so the game will prevent them from following through with this action. With Stormfang, however, the player is able to disenchant it as if it were a regular item that could be found in the world. However, this isn't necessarily a bad thing, because...

1 It's One Of A Few Unique Weapon That Respawns

Of all the unique weapons in the Elder Scrolls series, Stormfang may be weak, but it is one of the only ones that will respawn over time. The reason for this is unknown, as it will always appear in the exact same location once the enemies also respawn, but it may have something to do with the curse that was placed on Ulfgar the Unending that made him functionally immortal in the first place.
