Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda will not change plans for Arkane Studios’ time-loop shooter Deathloop to remain PlayStation 5 exclusive.

Game Informer magazine's latest issue featured an update on Deathloop, an upcoming shooter-puzzle hybrid from Arkane Studios that was delayed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The piece, which included an official statement from a Bethesda spokesperson associated with the game, addressed a lingering question regarding whether fans could anticipate additional Deathloop releases beyond the promised PlayStation 5 version.

France-based developer Arkane Studios, best known for the Dishonored and Prey series, is owned by ZeniMax Media. ZeniMax and other companies under its umbrella, including id Software, Tango Gameworks, and Bethesda Softworks, were recently acquired by Microsoft. This resulted in speculation that Deathloop might see a release for the Xbox Series X and S consoles - and even that it might be transferred entirely from the PlayStation to the Xbox under Microsoft's authority.

However, Game Informer's article included confirmation that Deathloop will remain a PlayStation 5 title, and that its development would be largely unaffected by Microsoft's purchase. "We're developing exclusively for PlayStation 5 on console and also PC," Bethesda's official statement reads.

Xbox has confirmed this news, reiterating that both Deathloop and Tango Gameworks' upcoming title Ghostwire: Tokyo are planned to remain PlayStation 5 exclusives for at least a full year following their release.

Deathloop, which was first revealed at E3 2019, puts players in the role of Colt, an assassin stuck in a time loop on the notorious "party island" of Blackreef. Players must complete the single-day time loop over and over in order to figure out why this has happened to Colt and how he can escape before time resets at midnight.

A recent Deathloop trailer revealed that Colt's primary goal will be to take out eight key targets known as "the Visionaries" before the stroke of midnight. The gameplay-focused trailer also announced that an optional multiplayer mode will allow players to take on the role of a Visionary named Julianna and enter other players' games as an obstacle to their versions of Colt.

Microsoft reportedly plans to release a video presentation on Thursday, March 11, that will contain more details regarding the company's acquisition of Bethesda and other ZeniMax properties. A statement from Microsoft also confirms that Bethesda titles will be added to the Xbox Game Pass subscription service in the near future, but a concrete date for this addition has not yet been announced.

Deathloop is releasing on May 21, 2021 for PC and PlayStation 5.
