Even WandaVision star Elizabeth Olsen thought that the Fox and MCU timelines might be merging with the introduction of X-Men's Evan Peters.

It's one of the biggest fan debates of the moment: 'When and how will the MCU finally introduce the X-Men?' Ever since Disney purchased Fox, thereby securing the rights to the X-Men characters, audiences have eagerly awaited news of seeing their favorite mutants make their way into the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe, and there have been theories upon theories debating how the company might finally do it, especially with the release of Elizabeth Olsen's WandaVision.

One of the bigger questions in that debate is whether or not the MCU will attempt to introduce the existing X-Men characters from Fox's continuity or if they will simply reintroduce the mutants in order to get a fresh start. While fans waited for more information, the debate was unexpectedly kickstarted yet again by one particular WandaVision character.

During the course of the story, Wanda is trying to get a handle on her make-believe sitcom life inside of Westview, when all of a sudden someone knocks on her door without warning. When she opens it up, however, the person on the other side is her long-dead brother Pietro, but this time played by actor Evan Peters, who also played Quicksilver in Fox's X-Men films.

Naturally, this reveal sent fans into a frenzy as people argued passionately about whether the actor's appearance was a cameo, Easter egg, a red-herring, or proof that the Fox timeline would be merged into the MCU. In the end, the question was left mostly unanswered, with very little information given about exactly who the character was and where he came from, but fans weren't the only ones who thought it might be a tease for something bigger.

During an interview with Variety, Olsen said she was as shocked as anyone else when she heard that Peters would be cast in WandaVision, leading her to wonder if the two properties really were going to crossover: "When we heard that Evan was going to do it, my mind was blown. 'This is the first time we’re merging! This is crazy!'"

While Olsen couldn't say whether there were plans to keep introducing the Fox's X-Men characters, she did clarify that she isn't expecting a multiverse connection, at least for now: "I didn’t know about the multiverse when we were filming this. So I wouldn’t assume that that’s what was happening." She did mention a "larger plan" for the multiverse in regards to the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel but didn't have much detail to share.

Hopefully, as the MCU continues to showcase its phase 4 plans, there will be a clearer picture of how the mutants will make their way into the MCU, as they undoubtedly will. Until then, fans will just have to keep debating until something more concrete comes along to sink their teeth into.

WandaVision is now available on Disney Plus.
