Since the game's announcement back in 2018, things haven't exactly flowed smoothly for Dying Light 2, with Techland delaying the sequel indefinitely last year with no mention of when it'd be hitting shelves. Following the significant hiatus, reports hit the web concerning toxic work environments at the Polish studio, with accusations being levied at its CEO, Pawel Marchewka.

Regardless, it seems the team is continuing to push forward with the project, announcing today that it will be talking about Dying Light 2 very soon. According to a post on the game's official Twitter, there will be a developer update next Wednesday, March 17, with players who join the team's Discord allegedly being the first to see it.

Not much else is shared regarding what will be unveiled in the update, however, the post does provide a short glimpse at a Volatile, which are a faster, stronger, and more menacing variation of Dying Light's zombies that only emerge at night. It seems the terrifying creatures will continue to stalk players in the sequel, which allegedly takes place 15 years after the events of the first game. The developers will have a lot to fill players in on, especially as news on the game has been relatively slim since an action-packed slice of gameplay that debuted back in 2019.

For those who missed the Dying Light 2 announcement, the sequel takes place in a world overrun by the undead, with players assuming the role of Aiden Caldwell: an infected survivor searching for a cure. Unlike the last title, Dying Light 2 relies heavily on the concept of choice and consequence, with players having to make impactful moral decisions that will alter the story and the game world. Early game footage showed this dramatically affecting how the protagonist navigates areas of the sequel's open-world setting, as buildings that could be traversable in some playthroughs would be destroyed in others. It's an ambitious concept and one that players seem excited to unravel.

On top of that, it appears the original's blend of fast-paced parkour and brutal zombie-killing will return, with the gameplay footage from 2019 showing more grisly post-apocalyptic exploration. It remains to be seen if the game is still targeting a 2021 release, with it originally slated to hit shelves in Spring 2020. At the time, the devs claimed they needed longer to deliver the experience they'd intended when announcing the sequel, asking fans to be patient. Hopefully, players will get a little more clarity when the Dying Light dev announcement airs next week.
