Peaky Blinders star Kingsley Ben-Adir joins Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion opposite Samuel L. Jackson, who will return as Nick Fury.

Marvel Studios is on an absolute roll this year - not only in terms of new releases but also in providing updates on several Phase 4 projects that are still in early development. One such update regards the upcoming Secret Invasion series, which is being developed for Disney Plus, as Kingsley Ben-Adir of Peaky Blinders has been cast in a leading role for the project.

Deadline reports Ben-Adir will play a villain alongside Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury and Ben Mendelsohn's Talos, the Skrull who was introduced in Captain Marvel. As of now, the identity of Ben-Adir's villain is still unknown.

Secret Invasion will be based on the 2008 Marvel Comics story of the same name, which focuses on the alien race of shape-shifters who have been coming to Earth for several years. Brian Michael Bendis, the writer of the eight-issue comic miniseries, intended for Secret Invasion to be a direct sequel to the Annihilation storyline, which was released in 2006. Featured in the series are a slew of superhero squads, including the Mighty Avengers, New Avengers, Young Avengers, and the Fantastic Four.

Perhaps one of the most far-out theories circulating the web is that Secret Invasion could have some sort of tie-in with the rumored Spider-Woman film, which Olivia Wilde is said to be working on. In the comics, the Skrull Empress Veranke uses her shape-shifting powers to transform into Spider-Woman, taking her place as a double-agent for S.H.I.E.L.D. under the watch of Nick Fury. However, it is more likely that the series will have more to do with the Captain Marvel storyline since that is where the Skrulls were first introduced.

The Secret Invasion series was first revealed by Marvel Studios at the Walt Disney Company's Investor Day last year, along with two other comic-based series - Armor Wars and Ironheart. The shows are part of the company's push to expand the Marvel Cinematic Universe beyond the Avengers franchise, exploring different aspects of the comic books that tie into the stories of the OG superheroes.

While Secret Invasion will introduce a new team of Skrulls that will impersonate many of the superheroes on Earth, Armor Wars and Ironheart will look at the stories of two characters with ties to the Avengers' founding member, Iron Man. Don Cheadle will return as James Rhodes, a.k.a. War Machine, in the former, while Dominique Thorne will portray Riri Williams, a genius inventor who created an advanced suit based on Tony Stark's original invention, in the latter.

Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion is currently in development at Marvel Studios.
