Square Enix's plans for Marvel's Avengers haven't gone smoothly since the game's launch in September 2020. Reception to the game, combined with post-launch content delays from Crystal Dynamics, has been frustrating for all parties involved. At the moment, however, there's reason to be excited. Square Enix confirmed during its spring 2021 presentation Thursday morning that Marvel's Avengers' next-gen update and Operation: Hawkeye are launching today.
An update for Marvel's Avengers is now rolling out for both PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This update will allow Marvel's Avengers to utilize the additional power in the next-generation consoles to offer improved performance and features. Not only will PS4 and Xbox One Marvel's Avengers be able to upgrade their games if they have the new consoles, but the update will be entirely free, as well. Players will also be able to transfer their save games without losing any progress.

As for specific features added with the next-gen update for Marvel's Avengers, Square Enix has confirmed several key changes. Resolution improvements are obviously a big change. The PS5 and Xbox Series X will both receive up to 4K resolution, with the Xbox Series S having up to 1440p. The update will also "dramatically" improve loading times and in-game streaming, allowing for higher-resolution textures, larger draw distances, and high-resolution models.
Crystal Dynamics has also improved the visuals of certain gameplay elements, as well. Specifically, the game's Heroics, what it calls each character's abilities, have been improved. Also improved is the game's armor destruction, the main way the game communicates damage visually. These changes will hopefully improve the game's moment-to-moment visuals mid-action.
In addition to the next-gen game upgrades, Square Enix is also releasing the Operation: Hawkeye - Future Imperfect DLC. This is a direct continuation of the Marvel's Avengers storyline from the Kate Bishop Hawkeye Operation. Hawkeye's search for Nick Fury continues as the goal of ending the rise of AIM nears, though that may be an illusion. Scientist Supreme Monica Rappaccini continues to have a major role to play in this chapter, as well. As for how Hawkeye ends up in the future, interacting with future Maestro and Taskmaster, that's something players will have to discover for themselves.
The Operation: Hawkeye - Future Imperfect DLC is packed with way more content, too. There's the new playable hero, a new villain, and two new features. First is the Reassemble Campaign Replay, which lets players replay the campaign without losing progress, and a customizable HARM room, letting players challenge themselves to their fullest ability. But as Crystal Dynamics made clear with its new Marvel's Avengers roadmap, there's plenty more to come.
Marvel's Avengers is now available for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
