The Powerpuff Girls started life on Cartoon Network before eventually spawning an anime series. What are some major differences between the two shows?

Powerpuff Girls Z is an anime based on the original Cartoon Network TV series The Powerpuff Girls. The series aired in Japan (in Japanese) between July 2006 and June 2007 and had 52 episodes. There was a manga too. It was co-produced by Cartoon Network's Japan studio and Aniplex, a well-known Japanese production company owned by Sony. In 2008, an English-dubbed version was released.

The original American cartoon series The Powerpuff Girls — which won an Emmy — came out in 1998 and was even rebooted in 2016. Besides the fact that one is a Japanese animated work and the other American, Powerpuff Girls Z is not the same as The Powerpuff Girls that 90's kids remember.

8 Hyper Blossom & Her Yo-Yo

Blossom is no more. In the anime, she is Hyper Blossom and has a real name: Momoko Akatsutsumi. While still the leader of the trio, Hyper Blossom's personality is not like her counterpart in the American cartoon. She is ditzy, has a sweet tooth, and chases boys. That being said, Hyper Blossom is dedicated to helping others; so much so, she is referred to as a "hero maniac." And, Hyper Blossom is clever.

Although Blossom in the American cartoon does not use a weapon, Hyper Blossom in the Japanese anime wields a Yo-Yo. That's why they call her "Hyper" Blossom.

7 Rolling Bubbles & Her Wand

Bubbles is gone. In the anime, she is Rolling Bubbles and goes by Miyako Gotokuji. Similar to her counterpart in the American cartoon, she is silly. Rolling Bubbles does not understand her powers but will go off if provoked. And, she is polite, loves shopping, and has the ability to talk to animals. Also, Rolling Bubbles has Octi, the same plushie Bubbles has.

However, unlike Bubbles, Rolling Bubbles is mature and level-headed compared to her partners. She gets all the boys, too. Rolling Bubbles also uses a weapon: a Wand. It blows bubbles, which is why she is called "Rolling" Bubbles.

6 Powered Buttercup & Her Hammer

Buttercup is done. In the anime, she is Powered Buttercup and named Kaoru Matsubara. Like her American cartoon counterpart, she is sporty and athletic; Powered Buttercup hates skirts (and other "girly" things) but loves skateboarding (and other "boyish" things). She also comes off as rude often.

Unlike Buttercup though, who sticks to using fisticuffs, Powered Buttercup fights using a Hammer. This is why she is called "Powered" Buttercup.

5 The Powerpuff Girls (Z) Are Not Sisters

In the American cartoon, the Powerpuff Girls were created by Professor Utonium (using "sugar, spice, and everything nice"). He accidentally added Chemical X, which granted Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup superpowers. The rest is history.

In Powerpuff Girls Z, a boy by the name of Ken Kitazawa takes Chemical X and creates a variant called Chemical Z. He then uses it to destroy an ice glacier (for the greater good) which sets off Z-Rays from the aftermath. Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup are hit with the white (the "good") versions of these rays and get their superpowers.

They are not sisters (or even children), just three eighth-graders who come from separate families. In fact, Blossom has a younger sister and Buttercup has two brothers. Bubbles is an only child.

4 The Professor Has A Son & A Wife (& A Dog)

Professor Utonium is not only the creator of the Powerpuff Girls in the American cartoon but also their father. He has no other children or even a spouse; not even a pet!

But in the anime, the Professor has a son (Ken Kitazawa), a robot dog (Poochi), and a wife who is unknown but apparently real. While he cares for Hyper Blossom, Rolling Bubbles, and Powered Buttercup as if he were their father, he is not their guardian at all.

3 Mojo Jojo Has Lost His Jojo

In the American cartoon, Mojo Jojo is the main villain. He is an actual evil genius ape-human, constantly trying to destroy the Powerpuff Girls and then take over the world. Before turning bad, Mojo Jojo was also the former lab assistant of the Professor and even pushed him into the bottle of Chemical X that led to the creation of the Powerpuff Girls.

Yet, in the anime, the villain is not that nefarious and has nothing to do with the Powerpuff Girls' making. Mojo Jojo was a regular monkey in the zoo who got hit with the black version (the "evil") of the Z-Rays and now seeks revenge on humans for teasing him. But to the Powerpuff Girls, he is just kind of annoying, not dangerous whatsoever.

2 Princess Morbucks Befriends The Girls

Princess Morbucks is one of the main antagonists in the American cartoon. Beyond being rich and spoiled, she is a supervillain.

Now, in the Japanese show, Princess Morbucks (or, Himeko Shirogane) is a villain too, but she changes for the better. Princess Morbucks is hit by the black version of the Z-Rays which grants her superpowers as well as makes her evil. While she hates her classmates Hyper Blossom, Rolling Bubbles, and Powered Buttercup (even before her transformation), Princess Morbucks warms up to them eventually and becomes friends with the trio.

Just like the American cartoon version, Princess Morbucks thrives on attention. But she has no interest in joining the team of villains in Powerpuff Girls Z.

1 Bye Townsville, Hello Tokyo

The City of Townsville is the main location in the American cartoon. It is where the people live as well as where all the action goes down. While Townsville is a fictional place, there is actually a Townsville in Queensland, Australia as well as in North Carolina, United States.

On the flip side, Powerpuff Girls Z takes place in Tokyo, the real-life metropolitan city in Japan. That being said, in the English-dubbed version, it is called New Townsville.
