There's been a flurry of Star Wars-related gaming news, lately. Whether it's regarding the resurgence of Lucasfilm Games or the news that Ubisoft is developing a Star Wars title, there's been a shakeup in the Star Wars gaming universe. That shakeup is potentially about to grow meaningfully larger, if a new rumor is to be believed. It's being reported from several sources that a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is in development, but not from who fans would expect.
Rumors started about a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic some time ago, but one of the first reliable hints of its existence came just this past December. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier posted on ResetEra in a thread about the rumors, saying that "Nobody's going to guess right" about the game's developer. Given that at the time everyone believed Electronic Arts still had an exclusive deal for Star Wars games, Schreier's comments heavily implied that it would not be an EA studio working on the game.

This rumor has grown tremendously just recently, however. Insider podcaster Bespin Bulletin recently shared that it had confirmed with unnamed sources that a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is in development at an unconfirmed studio. Unfortunately, the podcaster didn't provide any other information about the game, other than mentioning the Schreier quote. It's possible that they based their insider information entirely on the Schreier quote.
However, another reliable industry insider has since also hinted at the existence of a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game. Shinobi602, communications manager at Wushu Studios, also posted a message on ResetEra. They, like Schreier, are talking about the game's development studio. They say that "It's not as mysterious as you think. It's just not a household name most people are aware of." In other words, their comment assumes knowledge of the game's existence.
Suffice to say, it doesn't even seem like a well-kept secret among industry insiders that a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game is currently in development. Rather, it seems like folks are comfortable discussing that it exists. However, they're otherwise unwilling to reveal further details about the game, including what studio is making it. That it isn't Electronic Arts isn't as big of a surprise as it would have been some time ago, and doesn't really narrow the options.
Regardless, the existence of a new Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic game is certain to please a great many Star Wars fans. The two RPGs in the series are very beloved, being the pre-cursors to the Mass Effect franchise in many ways. Hopefully, more information about the project is shares sooner rather than later, if only to avoid more of these ambiguous leaks.
