Players looking for unconventional weapons in Monster Hunter World Iceborne will find some in the Whetfish Sabers; available through an event quest.

Event weapons in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne are some of the more unique weapons in the game and are often a little sillier in nature than its standard weapons. The Whetfish Saber dual blades definitely fall into the category of silly event weapons. Players wanting to kill monsters by hitting them with two fish will want to follow these steps to get the sabers in Monster Hunter World.

Unlike many of the other event weapons, such as the Well-Done Hammer, the Whetfish Sabers can be acquired very early on into Master Rank. The materials players will need to craft the sabers are as follows:

  • 1 Whetfish Ticket
  • 2 Jyuratodus Shards
  • 1 Jyuratodus Grandfin
  • 5 Eltalite Ore

The two Jyuratodus materials will likely be easiest to get, as they can be obtained from hunting a Master Rank Jyuratodus, which is available to hunt almost immediately with the 1 star quest Juyra in My Way. Breaking Jyuratodus' fin will guarantee a drop of the Grandfin, whereas Jyuratodus Shards have a high appearance rate of 34% when carving or capturing. Eltalite Ore, meanwhile, is most commonly found mining ore nodes in Master Rank instances of the Ancient Forest, but it can be found in any Master Rank area.

The Whetfish Ticket is where the event quest, A Fish to Whet Your Appetite comes in. This is also a 1 star quest with the objective of catching two Grand Whetfish. This quest will take place in the Wildspire Wastes and Grand Whetfish most commonly appear in the fishing area in area 6 by the campsite there. They can also be found in the water north of the first camp in area 1. It may be necessary to wander around a bit in different areas to wait for them to appear, but they'll be large fish and thus easy to spot. The Ghillie Mantle can also be used to avoid scaring fish off.

Once all the materials have been gathered, the Whetfish Sabers can be crafted at the workshop.

The Whetfish Sabers can be upgraded once to become Whetfish Sabers+. While the initial crafting of the sabers can be accomplished quite early, players will need to be near the endgame of Iceborne in order to upgrade them. To upgrade the Whetfish Sabers, players will need:

  • 1 Whetfish Ticket
  • 3 Namielle Whiskers
  • 3 Flood Sacks
  • 1 Conqueror's Seal

Run A Fish to Whet Your Appetite again for the another Whetfish Ticket if necessary. Flood sacks can be obtained from hunting Master Rank Jyuratodus or Coral Pukei-Pukei. Jyuratodus has a slightly higher drop chance through normal hunts, but Coral Pukei-Pukei has a higher drop chance for the flood sacks during investigations. Namielle Whiskers have a 66% chance of being dropped when Namielle's head is broken, but also can be carved or obtained as a quest reward, albeit at a lower chance (16% and 9% chances respectively). As for the Conqueror's Seal, it can be obtained from completing Elder Dragon quests. Hunt Namielle to kill two birds with one stone.

Once all the materials have been acquired, the Whetfish Sabers can be upgraded, resulting in dual blades with 322 attack, 390 water element, 5% affinity, purple sharpness and the protective polish skill which prevents weapon sharpness from decreasing for a minute after sharpening.

Monster Hunter World: Iceborne is now available on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
