In a hilarious video, Ryan Reynolds announced the new release date for his upcoming film Free Guy, which has been delayed multiple times.

In a major shuffle, Walt Disney Studios delayed the release of many of its highly-anticipated 2021 films. Among these is Free Guy, the action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds. In true Reynolds style, the Deadpool actor took to social media to make fun of the change in release date, as this isn’t the first time the film has been pushed.

In a short video posted to his Twitter account, Reynolds seems to be announcing the new release date for Free Guy, while joking that he has “never been so sure of anything.” The movie, produced by 20th Century Studios and distributed by Disney, has been delayed multiple times already. It was initially meant to release in July 2020, but with cinemas around North America shut, the Free Guy release date was pushed back to December and then to May 2021. The film will now premiere on August 13.

While the video begins with Reynolds expressing his fake excitement over a new release date, it hilariously turns into a clip with bad voice dubbing. It is obvious that Reynolds, who is also producing the movie alongside director Shawn Levy, is not thrilled about the multiple release date shifts Free Guy has had to make. But, what’s important to note is the way the video ends, with Reynolds unsure about the future.

20th Century Studios is not keen on the idea of a home release for Free Guy, something many other studios have turned to in these uncertain times for the film industry. But, with more theaters reopening, and hope being offered by the vaccine rollout in the United States, fans are still hopeful that Free Guy will, in fact, hit the big screens in August and this latest delay will be its last.

Free Guy will see Reynolds take on the role of a bank teller who realizes that he is actually living in an open world video game called Free City, which is “an amalgamation of Grand Theft Auto and Fortnite.” His aim is then to make himself the hero of the game by saving it before “the developers can shut it down.” The cast includes Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, Stranger Things’ Joe Keery, and Jojo Rabbit’s Taika Waititi.

Reynolds is known for being extremely active on social media. He recently live-tweeted while watching his 2011 films Green Lantern. The film, which did not fare well at the box office or with critics, has been mocked for years, including by Reynolds himself. The actor claimed to have never seen the film after its release, with this week marking his first viewing since then.

Free Guy will premiere in cinemas on August 13, 2021.
