The Epic Games Store's current and upcoming offerings for its free game of the week feature robot protagonists in a futuristic setting.

The Epic Games Store has become the go-to marketplace for players looking to try new indie titles. This not only thanks to its vast library of games created by indie developers, but also its weekly offering of free games. Next week’s free game is a side-scrolling thriller set in in a cyberpunk-inspired future.

The Epic Games Store’s sales tend to follow a theme. The past week’s theme was science fiction, with the survival-focused Surviving Mars offered as the store’s last free game. The theme for the next two weeks appears to be robot-themed, as both games feature mechanized protagonists.

Next week’s free game is Tales of the Neon Sea, a retro 2D side-scrolling adventure set on the waterfront of a polluted, neon-lit city. Players play as a hardened cyborg detective named Rex who is tasked with solving various puzzles, including missing persons and murder cases. One of Tales of the Neon Sea’s biggest draws is its dirty yet stylish environment that gives the game its namesake. Reviewers have also praised the game for its use of sound and gripping stories. Tales of the Neon Sea was developed by the Chinese studio Palm Pioneer.

The Epic Games Store’s current free game is Creature in the Well, a top-down hacker adventure game set in a post-apocalyptic setting. Players take control of BOT-C, the last remaining robot of its kind, who must save the town of mirage from a sandstorm by reactivating an ancient weather machine. The machine is guarded by a mysterious creature that will try to stop players from accomplishing their goal. Creature in the Well was created by Flight School studio and has received generally positive reviews. It won the award for “outstanding original game” at Unreal’s E3 competition.

Creature in the Well is available through April 1, with Tales of the Neon Sea becoming free that same day. While both titles are very different games, each includes quirky side characters with unique stories and a futuristic setting.

The Epic Games Store is currently in the middle of its Spring Sale. Fans can get up to 75% percent off on multiple titles, including spotlight deals on games such as Red Dead Redemption 2, Assassins Creed Valhalla, Godfall, and the recently released Hitman 3. The sale also includes discounts on BAFTA award-winning games. Triple-a and indie titles are featured on the list, including Cyberpunk 2077 and The Last Campfire, a story-driven adventure game where players must solve puzzles to find their way home. The Epic Games Store’s Spring Sale event lasts through April 8.
