After a rocky launch in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 developer CJ Projekt Red is releasing modding support tools for PC gamers.

CJ Projekt Red, developer of The Witcher seriesbecame a household name in the video game industry when Cyberpunk 2077 was finally released on December 10, 2020. To many gamers, it was considered the most-anticipated game of the year, if not the decade. The general angst built to an all-time high when its new IP was delayed on more than one occasion. Cyberpunk 2077 was put in a very tough situation from the start. However, a new modding development could help bring back a portion of the PC player base.

The game was introduced to the wild over one month ago and the daily critiques, bug announcements, public scrutiny, and negative reviews have flowed since. CJ Projekt Red answered the criticisms against the RPG week-after-week. An important figure at the studio shared his thoughts on Cyberpunk 2077's development. At one point, Cyberpunk 2077 was pulled off of shelves completely. It was at this time that CD Projekt Red had to go back to the drawing board.

It appears the Poland-based game developer is beginning to address Cyberpunk 2077 player concerns. In a post that appeared on its website, CD Projekt Red announced the inclusion of official modding support tools to enhance the gaming experience on PC. Cyberpunk 2077 will offer modding tools such as Metadata, ArchiveDump, TweakDump and TweakDB IDs. The post gives a brief description of each one. Each mod was released today, and at the top of the page, it's revealed they will "be continuously updated alongside game patches to ensure compatibility."

While these are the first official modding tools directly from CD Projekt Red, the Cyberpunk 2077 community already got a head start modding the game to their liking. A visual graphic enhancement was made in order for the game to look similar to the art style of Borderlands, which is a very unique look from the Gearbox studio. One Reddit user is even creating a Cyberpunk 2077 mod that will allow players to enjoy the game in virtual reality.

After unveiling a roadmap for Cyberpunk 2077, developers are searching for goodwill among the community. Patch 1.1 was released in mid-January, with patch 1.2 expected to come out within the next several months. Throughout the rest of 2021, CD Projekt Red promised, multiple updates and improvements will arrive, like free DLC and a next-gen console update. The latter is arguably the most important piece to that puzzle, after harsh criticism was directed at the game for poor performance on current-gen consoles.

Modding support tools will not bring Cyberpunk 2077 to the front of the line for PC gamers, but it does instill faith that the developer is putting the player first, by giving people room for creativity. Additionally, these are likely not the only modifications CD Projekt Red will ever produce. Other AAA titles on PC allowed the community to build elaborate mods for their games, with Borderlands as an example.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available now for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series console versions in development.
