Halo: Combat Evolved released back in 2001 and swiftly rose to become Xbox’s flagship series. Though it has been 20 years since its release, the Halo community is still going on strong. Since the release of the first game, there have been several new installments in the series. Along with these new installments, there has been fan art and even an upcoming TV series inspired by the game. The game is credited for many innovations that have led to the modern form of the FPS game.
Modding is the process of altering a game to allow otherwise impossible things in the base game to become possible. Many have found creative and bizarre uses for this in the past. Halo: Custom Edition is an expansion for Combat Evolved that is specifically built for creating and sharing mod content. The expansion came out in 2004 but is still active and popular today. The use of Custom Edition also allows for more complex mods requiring players to replace content in the expansions install directory with alternative files.

It is this method that Youtuber Inferno Plus used to make his mod “Halo Kart.” Halo Kart is a mod for Halo that allows players to play Mario Kart within the game. The mod lets players use an M12 LRV Warthog-inspired vehicle called a “wart cart” to race each other over several tracks from Nintendo’s Mario Kart 64. While racing, players can pick up power-ups littered across the tracks to try and shoot and kill their opponents or drive them over the edge. The creator of the mod has said that whilst it is fun to play, there are a lot of unfixable bugs due to engine limitations. Inferno Plus likened the buggy experience to playing “a Bethesda game at launch.”
Inferno Plus is known for his popular videos where he goes into humorous detail about ridiculous mods he makes to Halo: Combat Evolved. In the past Inferno has made mods such as “The Longest Warthog Possible” where he recreated Halo’s iconic vehicle stretched to a ridiculous length. He has also created “Dark Souls except it’s Halo,” a mod that brings Dark Souls mechanics and models into Halo.
Halo fans are likely to think the mod is great fun. While some might scoff at the technical issues, what Inferno has been able to create, given the limitations of the Halo engine, is quite impressive. For those interested in the more technical details, Inferno goes into detail about his coding and process on his second channel.
Halo: Combat Evolved is available now on Mac, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Windows.
