Stop-motion animation seems to be all the rage right now. A few days ago the official Twitter account for Sonic the Hedgehog released a short stop-motion video featuring the blue hedgehog, and now Adult Swim is getting in on the fun with its own Rick and Morty meets Animal Crossing: New Horizons short.
Adult Swim released the video on its YouTube channel the day Animal Crossing: New Horizons celebrated its one year anniversary. Dropping near the beginning of the pandemic, the colorful, relaxing video game quickly became one of the most popular Switch titles ever and remains extremely popular a year out.

If any fans are wondering what ties Rick and Morty and Animal Crossing together, the answer is a definitive nothing, however that's never stopped the dynamic duo in the past. Rick and Morty have appeared in a PlayStation 5 ad, the opening credits of a Simpsons episode, and a Run the Jewels music video, none of which have any real connections to the Adult Swim cartoon. Largely, Rick and Morty tend to appear in things for the fun of it, and that seems to be the case with the Animal Crossing video.
While the video itself is actually animated using computers, it visually pays homage to the stop-motion, clay-animated techniques of works like Wallace and Gromit and classic holiday TV movies like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Of course, the whole video has a unique Rick and Morty spin to it and has a darker tone than the stop-motion works that might have inspired it. Regardless, the Animal Crossing short is a nice nod to a popular Nintendo game and a fun treat for fans eagerly awaiting news of Rick and Morty's Season 5 release date.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available for Nintendo Switch.
