Nier: Automata pushes the philosophy envelop inside and outside the game with the idea of "becoming as gods," becoming a special edition title.

Nier: Automata Become as Gods Edition is a special edition of Nier: Automata that originally released on the Xbox One on June 26, 2018. The Become as Gods Edition of Nier: Automata recently released on Xbox Game Pass, bringing this edition to the PC for the first time.

"Become as gods" is a narrative theme found within Nier: Automata, where the gods refer to the creators of the Machines and Androids. The Androids were created by humans while the Machines were created by the aliens that invaded earth, pitting the Androids and the Machines against each other in a long-lasting war.

In the Nier: Automata story, “Become as Gods” is a recurring theme that focuses on the Androids and the Machines, and the idea of meaning and becoming like their creators. With their creators long dead, some Machines start to develop deep emotional connections, or at least what they believe to be an emotional connection. Some Machines go so far as to emulate making babies or caring for their loved ones. These displays of emotion constantly trigger the Androids into questioning more about their mission to destroy the Machines.

As with most philosophical ideals, the Machines eventually develop their own individual definitions of becoming as gods or developing meaning. Some Machines believe that love and emotion are what give meaning allowing them to become as gods, while others believe they may become as gods through death. The question of meaning is tied deeply with the idea of becoming as gods throughout Nier: Automata.

The Become as Gods Edition of Nier: Automata offers nothing new in terms of gameplay content, but was the first edition that included the base game and DLC bundled together. This makes the Nier: Automata Become as Gods Edition, essentially the same as the Game of the Yorha Edition, available on all platforms. The differences between these two versions can be found on the PC platform.

Steam currently distributes an older build of Nier: Automata that has been full of PC-specific issues, forcing players to resort to mods to improve gameplay. The Become As Gods Edition recently released on Game Pass for PC, brings an updated build of Nier: Automata that fixed many of the issues Steam users have been using mods to fix. Many Steam users are expressing their frustration with their paid version of the game running poorly compared to the basically "free" Game Pass version.

Players have gone so far as review-bombing the Steam version of Nier: Automata for its outdated game build and lack of information around updating it to the Game Pass build of Nier: Automata. While the Game Pass Become as Gods Edition was exclusive to Xbox, it is the same overall game as the Game of the Yorha Edition, with both offering the same content and DLC.

Nier: Automata is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
