Xbox takes advantage of reports that Sony is shutting down PlayStation Stores by promoting its library of backward compatible games.

It's surely no coincidence that Xbox is promoting its backward compatible games available through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate mere days after Sony confirmed it's shutting down its PlayStation Stores on PS3, PS Vita, and PSP. When this happens, the games in those stores will no longer be available to purchase. Though they can still be downloaded, the games can only be played on the console it was downloaded from. Xbox, however, has been working on ways to allow access to older games on all its hardware--even its newest console--which might sting a bit for PlayStation owners.

The official Xbox website posted a lengthy explanation of its Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) program, showcasing a number of games Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members have access to. The library of available titles is limited, but more games will be added in the future. As Xbox states, "We’ve enabled this experience through our backward compatibility program, launched in 2015. Since then we’ve launched multiple consoles and are still committed to making games across generations available to you no matter the hardware." Members will be able to play these Xbox games on mobile devices as well.

Backward compatibility has long been an important, often-requested feature with each new console generation. Typically, games only from the previous generation can be played on newer consoles, but Xbox is working on changing that through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Meanwhile, PlayStation is potentially cutting off access to a library of older, affordable games that newer generation console owners won't have access to unless they pay a higher price. With this in mind, it's highly suggested that PS3 owners rush to their consoles and decide which classic PS2 games to buy before the PlayStation Store shuts down. There are also a number of PS1 classic titles to consider.

Besides the Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) program, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members also get the benefits of Xbox Live Gold, which includes Games with Gold. Every month, members receive a batch of free games, which typically consists of two Xbox One titles and two Xbox 360 titles. Those interested in an Xbox Game Pass Ultimate will find an impressive discount during the upcoming Microsoft Store Spring Sale event when membership is only $1 for the first month. The sale also provides opportunities to find games and accessories at a majorly reduced price.

As an incentive to participate in the sale, Xbox is giving away free gift cards ahead of the event. A number of gift cards will be sent out, but not to everyone. Unfortunately, it all boils down to luck. However, those chosen will be able to add a small credit to their account towards new games. The gift cards will arrive via email directly from Xbox and, after following the included instructions, will offer a code to redeem.
